honored him Wednesday night with a dinner at the Green Mill William L Nichols Honored for 25 Years as Head Usher Ushers of the First Methodist churth presented a pen to William L Nichols at a dinner in his honor Wednesday night in recognition of his 25 years as head usher of the church The presentation was made by Carl Carlson Arrangements for the dinner were made by Dr R O Masters assistant head usher At tending were 25 ushers Mrs Nich ols Doctor Lloyd A Gustafson pastor and the Rev and Mrs George Sheils The dinner also honored the Sheils Mr Sheils associate pastor here since 1945 soon is to assume the pastorate of the Methodist church at Holstein Recalls Past Nichols reminisced back through the 25 years and an old pair of shoes snowing heavy wear were displayed His service has been under 5 pastorates They include those of Doctor J F Boeye 192229 Doc tor William HSpence 192935 Doctor C E Flynn 193541 Doc tor Marvin Kober 194145 and Doctor Gustafson During that time the church membership has almost doubled In 1924 it was listed as 1614 in 1929 at 1695 in 1935 at 1844 in 1941 at 1837 in 1945 2165 and in 1950 at 2900v Nichols recalled that the first ad of the church was run Doctor Spence closed his ministry by giv ing his last sermon from his sick bed at the parsonage next door Figures Shoe Mileage Doing somfe figuring on the quarter century span Nichols came up with totals to show his shoe mileage car mileage to and from church and various other accoutrements He lives a mile from the church so figuring each Sunday coming and going he has traveled 2600 miles he estimates he walks i mile up and down the aisles each Sunday or that he has gone 325 on the same carpet in the 25 years he has worn 50 suits and 50 pairs of shoes He concluded This gentlemen is my life as head usher among dear hearts and gentle people Im not going to retire I intend to keep going each week Titonka Womens Club in Session the last meeting of the Titonka Womans club held at the home of Mrs Clifford Krantz the annual election of officers was held with the following elected Mrs H A French president Mrs Harold Gartner vice president and program chairman Mrs W A Schram secretary and1 Mrs Clif ford Krantz treasurer The club voted to give a gift of to the public library and to pack a box of clothing to be sent overseas through the Lutheran agency Flail Benefit Dance Decorah A visit Will L Meyer who is a patient in the Still college hospital Rev Perry Samp son motored to Minneapolis Tues day to spend 2 days in attendance at the annual evangelism confer ence of the Evangelical Lutheran church Vincent San cento and infant daughter of New York City are spending 2 weeks at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs Warren Vest o y d Kansen of Redfield S Dak is visiting his uncle Leonard Peter and other relatives here and in Mason City and Mrs Leon ard Knoop left recently for a trip to Florida They expect to be gone 6 weeks Meservey Ralph Schmidt drove to Iowa City and brought back Mrs Schmidt and Jimmy Jimmy spent 10 days in the Mercy hospital following surgery Meservey Lester Dorenkamp took Herman Stadtlander to Gpodell and from there he went with a friend from Garner to Mo line 111 where they will attend an implement school for a week and Mrs Warren T Johnson visited recently with their daughter and family Mr and Mrs Wayne Schwartz at Buckeye J C Siemens Goldfield pioneer who resides alone fell at her home while go ing down the basement steps and suffered a broken leg and Mrs Carroll Engh and familyof Marshalltown visited relatives here Hoover Hatchery entertained flock owners at a din ner at the Methodist church Tues day M C Eggleton of the Ames extension department was the speaker f Alice Gross huesch accompanied her son the Rev Reuben Grosshuesch home to Melbourne where she will visit for several days W Muhlenbruck of Hampton was a recent caller at the home of Mr and Mrs H W Freie and Mrs Milton Hackbarth and Mrs Ernest Hack barth left for Phoenix Ariz to visit relatives Mr and Mrs Mil ton Hackbarth will return soon leaving Mrs Ernest Hackbarth for a longer visit II a n I o n t o w and Mrs Ralph Pauley and 2 children of Maryland have been visiting friends here Mr Pauley who has been in the army for several years has reenlisted and is employed in an arsenal in Maryland They are former residents here and Mrs Jake Lolling were recent callers at the August Noefke home at Clarion Thompson Carol Stuart re turned home from Mason City fol lowing a tonsillectomy Mrs Ben Wessels returned home from the hospital at Mason City following observation and treatment and Mrs Daniel Landheer recently visited in the home of her parents Mr and Mrs W B Richardson and Mrs Walter Pihl Warren Phillips and Mrs YOU WW ASPUHM Alice Phillips of Algona returned home after attending the funeral of a relative and visiting relatives at Marietta Minn and in South Dakota Doris Gronbach dental nurse for Dr John Skogmo visited recently in the home of her sister Mrs Wilfred Berryhill at Superior Wis and Mrs Herman Brunes left for a few weeks va cation They will visit relatives in Miami Marble Rock Miss Leigh Dix on returned
