Bill Washington Taft ROhio came out Saturday against a proposal to earmark atiout in European recovery funds to buy American farm surpluses Taft who heads the senate re publican policy committee told a reporter lie is opposed to the committeeapproved amendment to the economic co operation administration money bill The amendment sponsored by Senator McClellan DArk also would require the army to buy about in surplus farm products freezing these and the EGA funds against being used for any other purposes Hoffman Objects EGA Administrator Paul Hoff man has contended the rigid sur plus buying requirement on his agency would hamstring opera tions and force foreign countries to take cotton and other commod ities they may not want Taft said he thought the amend ment is unwise I dont think we ought to be enacting a farm relief program in this bill Taft said The Ohio senator added how ever that he is likely to suppor in next weeks senate debate on the measure 2 other amendments op posed by Hoffman The senate wil resume discussion of the bill Mon day Senator Lucas of Illinois th democratic leader said he hope for a vote Tuesday Favors Loan Taft said he may back an amendment sponsored by Senator McCarran DNev which would tie up in EGA funds for loans to Spain Im in favor of a loan to Spain but I am not certain this is the way to do it the Ohio senator said Ill have to know more about it but I may vote for it He will support Taft said a in 4 Men Arreste Shooting of Cohen Bill Gives FBI Weapon Against Reds Washington UR Senator Homer Ferguson RMich said Saturday that his new communist control bill will give the justice department the means of breaking the communist conspiracy against the United States He said the bill already ap proved by a senate judiciary sub committee is a great refinement over the old MundtNixon meas use He said the new legislation would not destroy a persons rights nor lead to thought control Some people say that any such legislation will drive the commu nists underground Ferguson said All their spies and saboteurs are underground already He said the new bill will give the justice department all that is needed to bring action against the communists on the basis of the evidence already dug up by the FBI The subcommittee approved the bill Friday Ferguson said he ex pects early action by the full com mittee on the legislation which ho ponsored along with Senators Carl E Mundt RS Dak and Olin D Johnston DN committeeapproved amendment cutting off ECAs spending program for last April May and June bitration Morse added Harry Bridges
