   Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - April 23, 1948, Mason City, Iowa                                Belmond Youth Sign With USA 4 Join Air Forces Other Regular Army According to announcement by apt E H Martin commanding officer of the local U S army and LS air force recruiting main sta tion 4 young men from Belmond were enlisted in the air force and one m the regular army on April 13 1948 They are Russell H Been ken 20 son of Mr and Mrs Don ald Beenken Eldon L Boyd 17 brother of Mrs Mabel H Obrechl Randall R V Jenison 18 son of Mr and Mrs Vere E Jenison Eugene L Nelson 20 son of Mr and Mrs Oscar Nelson and Ketx neth J Hood 17 son of Mr and Mrs Alphonsus J Hood All 4 stated they were enlisting to take advantage of the many opportunities the service offers They were given their physical examinations at the recruiting station at 115 1st street S E Ma son City Four of the young men selected the air force as their branch of service and left the same day for the air training commands indoc trination center at San Antonio Texas The 5th Kenneth J Hood se lected the airborne division of the regular army and left for Fort Knox Ky where he will receive 3 months training upon the com pletion of which he will be trans ferred to the 82nd airborne divi sion located at iort Bragg N Car Hood staled that he was selecting the airborne division for the a month extra pay received by the armys paratroops Upon completion of the air force indoctrination trainingthe young men who selected the air force as their branch of service will be given leave to visit their families and then will be trans ferred to an iiir force training school for specialized training of their selection or will he sent to an air force base receive oiithe job training Capt Martin added that the re strictions placed on enlistments in the air force several weeks ago have been relaxed somewhat and that the air force is again accept ing for enlistments unmarried men between the ages of 17 and 3i
