sole ly from memory This was Comrade Marvin T Grattans reply when asked by the GlobeGazette whether there might be a reference in its presentation of his autobiography starting in the next issue to his present plight being under life sentence for the slaying of a man in an altercation which according to his claim brought a grandsons life into peril I write solely from memory he continued No statement riade will fail to pass a rigid investigation If my memory is not clear distinct and positive of an event I do not set it down Memory incidentally is not so remarkable a faculty Many animals excel us in this re spect notably the horse and the elephant Other Prison Writers As to shame for being here so many better men have done their best literary work behind prison doors that it is almost presumption striving to emulate them And so many innocent men have been jailed that to argue in that direction would be wasting your space Time and courts settle that Meanwhile I reflect that so great and good a man as John Bunyan wrote Pilgrims Progress while un justly imprisoned I was sentenced to life imprison ment at hard labor Manifestly being past 85 my sentence was light as to time while as to labor that was absurd Every one being kind and helpful here having con sideration for old age and its in fIrmiUes leaves me free to think and write Still Has Scholarly Impulses Once a man twice a child may be true of me physically I once con ceitedly thought myself the peer of all amateurs of my weight As to mentality readers may judge I do not feel inferior in brain though in tegral calculus logarithms declen aions anatomy hygiene etc sub Jects In which as a student I rankec 1933 is the third child In the has bee ident of Mason City since 1912 is a veteran of the World war and a member of the American Legion IOOF Dancing Club Will Meet Wednesday Saturday jKuiswI In first or close up may be a dim Still reminiscence has not wiped out scholarship entirely Neither has it destroyed my ability to work my way into lodge or chapter of the followers of Tubal Cain or those who knew the value of the stone which the builders rejected learned 64 years ago when I was neither a nonage dotage a madman or a fool Let some brother try me and get the grand hailing signal of distress in reply And then what Only G A R to Prison Mr Grattans only direct allu sion to his prison sentence is con tained in this letter in which he re affirms his claim made in court at Decorah last summer that he is not guilty of the crime of which he stands convicted that he slew Claude Meade to defend his grand son Henry Iowa he observes is the only one of the 48 which has a INSTALLATION OF CHURCH OFFICERS SUNDAY PROGRAM Ministers Discuss Import ance of Home Challenge to Evil Spirits Installation of of the MEYER MEMBER OF GOLDEN RULE Local Funeral Parlor Made Member of International Morticians Order Word has been received in Mason City that the Meyer Funeral home 243 Fifth street southeast has again been appointed as the member of the Order of the Golden Rule in this community This Order is an international af filiation of funeral directors having certain high ideals of service and rigid ethical standards Membership is not permanent and may be revoked at any time by the order Each year affiliation with the order automatically expires and the record of each member for the preceding year is then taken into consideration before he is again ac cepted Into this fellowship This ia the second time that the Meyer Funeral home has been ap pointed to uphold the high ideals of the order in this community The symbol of the order by which one may in nearly any community identify the local member repre sents a knight in full armor sup porting1 with his right hand a shield upon which is emblazoned the mot to the order Service measured not by gold but by the golden rule We notice also the love and sym pathy of this man who had come under the tutelage of the Holy Spirit he added He had accepted the fundamental principles of a new faith We take notice of the humil ity of this officer who might as well have been haughty Faith can not grow in a vain and proud mind Self conceit Is like a frost to the ten der bud of faith Peter was not ori ginally humble but had to become so before he could be useful in the Lord3 work God can speak to a humble per non and a humble person is willing to listen to God To a humble pelson God CBO reveal many things and in such a person the Holy Spirit de lights to abide and work Spiritual ignorance and unfamillarity with the Word of God accounts for much of the weakness and Ineffectiveness of the Christians faith We know God too little to trust Him Our spir itual learning has not kept pace with the worldly We need the ad monition Grow in grace and know ledge of our Lord and Saviour Je sus Christ On Blessing Home At St James Lutheran church the Rev O Mall gpoke on Gods Blessing in the Home In part the speaker said Jesus being every where He brings His blessings to all who accept Him He blesses the home if the occupants fear the Lord and live according to His will The unbelieving world is careless and thoughtless possessing no hu mility no patience and no spirit of forgiveness In such homes the blessings of the Lord cannot abide The Lord looks for a Christian heart a true living faith and fear and love to God The Luther league met in
