Per Cent Higher Than Average CLEAR LAKE May Clear Lake Silver Fox Farm which start ed its ranch last November now has a total of 143 Silver foxes Starting with 22 pair of registered Tuplin Dalton Silver fpxes the increase of 39 puppies is 50 per cent above the average Many of these young foxea are now six and seven weeks old and are growing rapidly The stock raised by the Clear Lake Silver fox farm is one of the oldest strains of foxes having orig inated at Prince Edward Island in 1887 by the capture of two Silver Fox puppies by Charles Dalton who is given credit for the establishing of this most unusual business The owners of the fox farm are well pleased with their yield this i season and have orders on hand for about one half their increase The young foxes born in April or May mature In aiout eight months and will reproduce at 12 months of age These foxes which are recognized as high quality stock wherever Sil ver Foxes are raised sell at 51500 a pair and have proved themselves to be a profitable investment at this figure Only 10 per cent of the sil ver foxes in the world according to competent authorities are good enough to keep for breeding stock and the investor should be very careful In selecting foxes for an in vestment as many unset upulus brockets will offer for sale any fox that can be classed as silver regard less of their record for production Of quality animals Fur is the basis of the fox farming industry but the animals must also be prolific as it is difficult to make a profit on small productions All of the investors of the Clear Lake Silver Fox Farm will be able to sell enough young foxes this year to return their original investment still retaining their original pairs The building program outlined for this years improvements on thfc farm will cost Sixtyseven more pens and other equipment will be completed in September Accom modations for 50 pair of mink will also be constructed Stockholders expect to double their herd each year for five years When 300 pair are reached the com pany willchange to a strictly pelt raising basis Cost of separate in surance is eliminated by the pooling of all foxes The increase is divided fa ther James Watts who bought and sold livestock In this community for more than 50 yars Is the favorite occupation of Cecil C Watts who recently accepted the position as sales manager of the newly organ ized North Iowa CoOperative Live stock Marketing association with headquarters at Mason City Mr Wats has been manager of the Clear Lake CoOperative asso ciation for more than five years During that time the membership has increased from 120 to 375 mem bers with annual reports averaging more than worth of busi ness Cecil Watts was born In Lincoln townhsip Aug 23 1888 and hos spent practically all of his life in intercommunity In 1912 he worked for the Chicago Northwestern un loading and feeding station at ila son City Three years following that he acted as traveling live stock agent and for 20 months he was employed as assistant to the general superintendent of the Union Stock Yards in Chicago Because of ill health in his family returned to Clear Lake and to3k up duties as livestock buyer for Ja cob E Decker at Mason City aud later went into business for hirr self as buyer and shipper of live stock in Clear Lake and territory The workI am about to under take i3 the
