chairman and embodying it is assumed the pres idents views The broad purposes are stated as follows 1 To promote the effective mer chandising of agricultural com modities in interstate and foreign commerce so that the industry of agriculture will be placed on a basis of economic equality with other in dustries 2 To protect control and sta bilize the current of interstate and foreign commerce in the marketing of agricultural commodities ami their food products by minimizing speculation preventing inefficient and wasteful methods of distribu tion and limiting undue and exces sive price fluctuations by encour aging the organization of producers Into cooperative associations and promoting the establishment and financing of a farm marketing sys tem of producerowned and pro message to congress especially that phase dealing with farm relief drew varying comment from senators and representatives Here are some of the opinions expressed Senator Norris of Nebraska a republican who campaigned for Smith in the last campaign said The people elected Mr Hoover on the assumption that he would give them a real farm relief plan This he has failed to do He has of fered nothing new Covers the Problem Senator McNary of Oregon chairman of the senate agriculture committee said The presidents message covers the problem of farm relief very well He specifies clearly the kind of relief he thinks congress should enact In my opinion he makes no mention of the debenture plan which the senate commute is now Chairman Haugen of the house agriculture committee A good message clear concise and to the point It covers the sit uation well Senator Watson of Indiana re publican leader The presidents message is sound and comprehensively stated It lu cidly sets forth the two
