IOWA CITY April speeches by atat authorities labor atory demonstrations and Inspec tions are features of the program of the second annual Iowa water works conference to be held at the University of Iowa April 10 11 and 12 Some 575 invitations have been sent to Iowa cities and towns hav ingmunicipal water supply the bids in each case going to the mayor and ffce superintendent of the water flforks The conference is under the joint auspices of the universitys col lege of engineering and the extcn tion division with the state depart ment of health c6operating Earle L Waterman professor of sanitary engineering at tho university is chairman of the executive com mittee Seventeen speeches three tours of inspection and three laboratory demonstrations make up the pro gram Among the outoftown speakers will be A H Wielers chief engineer of the state department of health Earnest Boycc chief engin eer of the Kansas State board of health Lawrence Max Levine and Harry N Jenks Iowa Slate college and C S Howard general manager of Iowa Valve company Des Moines Superintendents of water works in several Iowa cities will take prominent parts They are W L JMeeker Clinton C L Ehrhart Council Bluffs H V Pedersen Mav shalltown Jerome Powers Keokuk and H F Blomquist Cedar Rapids Laboratory tests demonstrating methods of making bacteriological examinations of water samples will be executed by Jack J HInman Jr of the state university Each confer ence guest may learn methods by actual practice Frank Hall Former Resident Is Buried in Nashua Cemetery NASHUA April body of Frank Hall a former Nashua resi dent who died at his home in Little Falls Minn Saturday arrived here Monday for burial in Greenwood cemetery Mr Hall was a resident of Na shua for a number of yearsmoving to Little Falls about 25 years ago where he worked as a carpenter He is survived by his wife and one daughter Mrs Grace Allen of near Nashua MotherinLaw Sits as Colleague of Lawmaker SPRINGFIELD Mass April 3 member of the Massachusetts legislature now has a fellow legisla tor as his motherinlaw John Kendall Joy Jr is a repre sentative in the state legislature He was married recently to Miss Lydia Brigham Mrs Fred Brigham mother of the bride is likewise a member of the state house of rep resentatives chosen from a district adjoining that of Representative Joy It is believed that Joy and Mrs Brigham are the only legislators in the country related to one another as soninlaw and motherinlaw THIRTEEN EVENTS ADDED TO STATE MUSIC FESTIVAL Revised Program Shows 31 Events for Prep Title Competition IOWA CITY April high school musicians will compel in 30 different events at the fourtl annual music festival to decide stat championships at the University c Iowa May 2 3 and 4 according t the revised schedule announced bj E H Wilcox of the school of music Thirteen events nine of which are in the woodwind and brass in strument competitor have been added to the original list Schools will compete in the A B and C classifications in five events so ths total number of contests is 40 Pro fessor Wilcox said The festival next month probably will attract about 2500 boys and girls from more than 100 high schools Six district meets were held last Friday and Saturday and the district champion in each event is eligible to compete in the final fes ival This Is the official list of events as released by baritone solo tuba solo and chamber groups of wind instru ments SHEEL DESIGNS HOOD FOR LABS Invention of Luther Man Will Remove Fumes of Chemicals DECORAH April 3 H W Sheel head of the chemistry de partment at Luther college has de signed a new ventilation hood for chemical laboratories which he says wilt remove even the heaviest fumes as quickly as they are formed Altho Professor Sheel first de signed his downdraft fume hood when he assumed full charge of the chemistry department here In 1908 he only recently has submitted it for factory production Sheel who Is the oldest member of the college faculty in years of service having come to Luther 40 years ago says earlier hoods were somewhat Imperfect and expensive They were for the most part com plex and inefficient he says Models made by himself have been in use in the college labora tories for a number of years The apparatus carries the fumes off by a system of pipes which may bo laid either under the floor or sus pended on the walls nr ceiling Woman Shares Duty With Her Sons Wife GREELEY Colo April 3 woman and her daughterinlaw share the responsibilities of a two room rural school near here Mrs Ida J Bowman is in charge of the four upper grades and Mrs George M Bowman her daughter inlaw has the lower grades They j share living quarter in the building which houses the school and have established a high standard in their
