all that could reasonably be expected of the windup of a sizzling campaign in a closely contested state Both Sides Confident Both Bides speak confidently of the outlook but neglect no honest oppor situation Such a picture of contradictions and uncertainties is thoroly consistent with Marylands past performances in presidential years Twice within the last quarter of a 1904 and result in thestate has been so close that the electoral vote was split Just be fore that Marylandvoted twice for McKinley and just afterward it voted twice for Wilson It went republican by in the Harding landslide and republican again by in the Coolidgre landslide In the face of these recent republi can pluralities the democrats have cherished a hope that a combination of elements will work for victory for Governor Smith Like New York Maryland has not seen fit to maintain a prohibition inforcement not oh Its statute books It lies wtlhin that bloc of states described by the anti saloon league as making up the first time in a presidential campaign on the prohibition issue It happens that some of the dryest are the normally democratic and strongly Methodist counties on Marylands eastern In that section Bishop Cannon has spokpn against Smith and many Meth odist ministers are active on behalf oC Hoover The widest discussion of iovernor Smiths religion likewise is apparent altho the republicans dis airplane dives according to officials at the school of medicine of ton university here A number of per sons thruout the United states have resorted to such drastic procedure in recent months in the hope of restor ing their hearing The ear Is one ofthe most com plex organs of the human said an expert In laryngology How com plex is indicated by the fact that the spiral ligament in the labyrinth of the ear is composed of fibers and the spiral ligament compared with the whole mechanism of hearing is as a screw to a dirigible Hearing is im paired or destroyed only by the de struction of some material portion of this intricate mechanism Once de stroyed no human agency can restore that portion So In effect what one who plunges in an airplane Is expecting Is that something that is gone will be brot back It would be as sensible for a onelegged man to plunge and ex pect when he reached the ground that he would have two legs There is only one exception That is hysterical deafness The treatment there is identical with treatment in general ahock or fright Hysterical deafness how ever is rare It might be Instantly cured by fright attending an airplane under stunts Jast as it might be cured by rousing the patient to great anger br scaring him out of his senses and Into hearing by some other drastic Earthquakes Undermine Mexico City Cathedral MEXICO CITY Walls and foundations which
