Cedar Rapids Gazette (Newspaper) - December 27, 1974, Cedar Rapids, Iowa The Cedar Rapids Gazette: Frl., Pee. 27, 1974    7 Asthma with Nasal Polyps Is Miserable By Oswald L James Jac oby South must put up dummy’s queen of spades at trick one It is not going to do him any good if held back. It doesn’t do him any good when he plays it, but it might have. If he can get them he will have three hearts, four diamonds and the two black aces. It also is easy enough to get them if he starts by leading a low heart and going up with dummy’s IO. East takes his queen and can do nothing better than return a diamond. South cashes four diamonds and now we see why it was up to him to have led a low heart the first time. Ile leads the nine and plays dummy’s eight if West plays low. This leaves tam in his own hand to lead a third heart through West’s king. What would have happened if East had held back his queen of hearts the first time the suit was played? South would have run off four diamond tricks and it would have been impossible for West to find three4 discards that would keep South from finding his ninth trick some way or other. Fla (IPI) — Veteran navy flyer Lee Scherer will take over as director of the John F. Kennedy Space Center in mid-January. The 55-year-old retired navy captain will succeed Dr. Kurt Debus, who retired last October after holding the {tost for 14 years, according to space agency officials in Washington. Scherer, whose navy career began 25 years ago, is a Charleston, SC., native who holds advanced degrees in aeronautical engineering. By Dr. S. I Andelman Our son suffers from asthma and from nasal polyps,” a mother writes, "and he is also allergic to many of the medications, including aspirin, that are often used to treat his condition. Is there anything you can recommend to bring him relief?” This young boy is not alone in the misery that results from a combination of asthma and nasal polyps, those obstructions in the lining membranes of the nose that further hamper breathing. Some 20 percent to •IO percent of asthma sufferers are also subject to nasal polyps. When those patients also suffer from multiple allergies to drugs — as this boy does — severe reactions can result. Hesitated Until recently, doctors hesi tated to remove the polyps in patients who suffered from allergies to medication, particularly to aspirin They feared the aspirin sensitivity would make the asthma worse. However, now a Midwestern doctor, Dr. Nicholas Schenck of St. Louis, Mo., Washington university school of medicine, has evidence that aspirin-allergic patients who suffer from asthma and nasal ob structions can get surgical relief. His in-depth study of aspirin-sensitive asthmatics suggests that removal of the nasal polyps did not worsen the patients’ asthmatic conditions. Results of the surgery indicate that one-third of the patients had improved overall asthmatic conditions, while IO others reported no change in their asthma All of the patients said nasal respiration was considerably improved by the surgery. Not Justified Based on this evidence, Dr. Schenck says the fears of precipitating or worsening asthma by removing the polyps in the aspirin-sensitive patient are not justified. In fact, he hopes his study will encourage doctors to recommend the surgery to their patients. If you or someone in your family suffers from aspirin sensitivity, esthma and nasal polyps, show this column to your physician and suggest he read the May-June, 1974, issue of Transactions, official journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology. The study was conducted for more than five years in a the 174 patients surveyed, a1-most one in IO had showed a sensitivity to aspirin at one time. Half of the patients had developed polyps before they first experienced an asthma attack. Four patients developed polyps at the same time as the asthma; five following the occurrence of asthma.SHOP TOMORROWSave on Floor Samples! Save on One-of-a-Kind Items! Save Tomorrow!
