A Friday first-nighter audience in Iowa City’s Clapp hall sat totally absorbed with the University of Iowa’s Opera Theater presentation of “Postcard to Morocco ”. The Dominick Argento op era, one of the most highly-touted of contemporary works, proved its quality with a smooth running performance with lines that were understandable and music that was Untenable. The F.nglish libretto was projected with well-directed clarity by the well-rounded cast. It was a cast that abounded in superior singing voices. The terrific duetting between soprano Cheryl Hinman and tenor Daniel McKinney was worthy of a barrage of bravos Alas, contemporary opera is of a continuous musical texture without convenient breaks for the benefit of the claquers. Likewise. Norman Carlberg was impressive, showcasing a fine, full-textured bass voice. The bizarre plot was purely incidental to the presentation, providing a fabric for the composer to drape hts musical Ideas upon. The opera has no social message. It’s merely a glimpse into the lives and characters of a handfnl of people that fate has thrown to getber This Argento has translated eloquently into music. And for the benefit of those who constantly carp about opera works covering up the singers, “Postcard” has a full complement of eight musicians in the pit, a neat and eloquent little combo that even scored well under the baton of William Hibbard with a Wagnerian divertimento.
