In fact, some of us might have 40 or more, though they may be on areas of the body where they aren't easily seen. Moles are generally thought of as small dark-brown spots that are either flat or slightly raised above the skin. But they may look quite different. They may be skin-color to pink, light-tan to brown and even blue-black. They may be flat or raised, large or small, with or without hairs, mottled or evenly colored. Benign Most moles are benign am will never be a threat to the health of the person who has Dr. Andelman them. However, sometimes what a person thinks is a mole is really a cancerous lesion. These are spots that do something out of the ordinary, acting differently from others on the body. It's a good idea to check any spot that: bleeds, itches or becomes painful; first appears when a person is past his teens or early 20s, or suddenly changes in size, shape or color. Doctors can easily differentiate su'ch growths from moles either by appearance or by removing part or all of the lesion and studying it under a microscope. If the lesion is cancerous, the doctor will remove it. If your mole is unsightly, you may wish to have it removed for cosmetic reasons. If it repeatedly becomes infected or is subject to trauma, remove it as a precaution. There's no evidence that these lesions, if simply moles, will become malignant, but it's best to remove them in case they are a cancer instead of a mole. Removal There are several ways to remove moles. Should I convert to H bonds, or cash in the Es? you switch to II bonds you will receive annually, on a 10-year average, ti percent of the full present value of your E bonds. This income wil'l lie subject only to federal income taxes. If you cash in part of the Es every year you will pay a federal lax on (he accrued interest included ill Ihe cash- in price. If you cash in all Ihe 10 bonds you will be subject to a federal lax on all the inter- est accrued. Only your accountant can tell you which is the best policy for you. (J I've heard that some brokers are offering bank notes paying 10 to II percent for six months. A I don't know to what you are referring. But it ought to be made clear that yields are given on an annual basis not for six months. Many good quality bonds today are yielding around the 9-HI per- cent level. Q I obtained II bonds by turning in E bonds. There is a figure written on the face of the bond. How does this affect (axes? A The represents the accrued interest in the E bonds on which you paid no income taxes. This tax liabil- ity is carried over onto the II bonds but you need not pay any tax on that accrued E bond interest until you redeem the II bonds or they mature. And that could be a long, long lime off. Q I recently attempted to buy slock but didn't succeed. Too young. If I can join the army, but on horses, anil vote in national elections, why can't I buy "lock until I am 21? A Because, financially speaking, you are a minor until age 21 and. therefore, the broker wants to protect him- self.
