An.delman Nearly everyone has suffered an electric shock ;il one Urn? or standing on a wet Moor or damp ground where your body acts as a conductor for the another. Usually it's nothing current to flow from the wire more than a slight tingle hut sometimes it can kill. You can receive an electric shock by touching both wires (if an electric circuit or touching just one wire while through your body In the ground. Victims of electric shock may stop breathing or breathe irregularly and with difficulty. Kleclric shock jolts the nerve center in the brain that con- trols breathing. A strong elec- tric current can cause a victim to lose consciousness imiiiodialely. Serious Shock There's enough electric current in most homes to produce serious shock, lint the most extreme cases of shock usually result from contact with a third rail or a high-vol- tage wire. If a person is touching a source of electricity, he should be removed immediately. But the rescuer must not touch the victim or he. too, will receive the electric shock. Remove the victim by using some dry material thai won'I conduct electricity wood, cloth or rubber. A broom handle works well to roll the victim away from the electricity source. Rubber gloves act as'insula- tion. Work quickly because (he longer the current passes through the victim's body the more serious his injury will be. Once the victim Is pulled away from the electrical source, check his breathing. If a heartbeat can't he delected, call a doctor or ambulance im- mediately. If someone else is around, have him call the doc- tor while you begin mouth-to- mouth artificial respiration. Continue until a doctor arrives.
