Cedar Rapids Gazette (Newspaper) - August 25, 1974, Cedar Rapids, Iowa TV Odar Rapids Gazette San., Aug- 25, 1974 /A It's th( Humane Thing To Do By Susan Welsh What does the certficate of registration for a purebred dog (often referred to as papers) actually represent9 Frequently one hears that a pet owner is going to raise a litter of puppies simply he cause the dog has “papers’ Others will purchase a pattie ular pet because it has “papers”, therefore it should be a good dog The certificate of registration is merely an identification — nothing more It states the names, birth date, names of sire and dam, breeder’s name, owner’s name and the number assigned to that indi vidual dog The American Kennel chih is undoubtedly the most well known of the registry agencies and the one most often referred to, registering 1,175 OOO dogs last year. The responsibility of a registry agency is that of recording purebred dogs which are eligible for such registration according to the information provided by the breeder and then assign mg a number for computer and filing purposes. The registry agency is not responsible for the quality, tempernient or potential of any of these dogs This certificate does not act as a stamp of approval in any way — it merely acknowledges thai the dog has been identified and on record, not unlike a birth certificate or automobile registration Therefore it is not a giltedged guarantee that the animal is an outstanding specimen of its breed, nor does ii include a promise of fantastic blue ribbon wins or fame in the field. The responsibility for the credibility of the individual dog and of the registration information lies solely with the breeder of the dog A rep Utable breeder does thorough research on his dogs, their backgrounds, temperment, quality, maintains proper records and then chooses the hest animals he possibly can before he raises a litter A responsible breeder will be able to tell a prospective buyer, within reason, what he may or may not expect from his puppies and what he feels their potential may or may not be He will be honest with a buyer if he feels a puppy is of pet-type quality only This is a dog which is purebred and eli gible for registration, but may not be of a quality necessary for the show ring, obedience or field trial competition. The breeder would encourage the buyer not to breed this dog, as It would not be in the best Interests of the breed. I>ogs certainly don’t have to be of the highest quality to be good pets. Besides, less than five percent of the registered dogs are ever shown. The breeder with integrity is not a person who just happens to own a purebred dog and breeds it because it has “papers” and is sure to make a profit by selling these “papered” puppies If would be- wise to follow the examples of the reputable breeder. This would be to the benefit and future of purebred dogs. Also, in this time of great concern regarding consumer protection laws, it would be wise to have the product be that which it is represented to be.
