Cedar Rapids Gazette (Newspaper) - August 12, 1974, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 2 The Cedar Rapids Gazette: MM.. Ang. 12. Q Are VOT aware of stud- ies which help in limiting stock market losses? I've heard of formulas which die- tale a sale after the Dow falls a certain percentage (12'y percent) from its high and indicate a purchase when the average recovers the same percentage from a low. 1 suppose there are any number of variations on this plan. A Let mf first give you a blanket answer: If any any formula worked percent, or even percent of the time it would attract so wide a following that it would become worth- less. Let's assume it became demciustniljly certain that a market index falling from, say, 830 would become a sa once it approached S.'iS. Ho many "savvy" traders woui wait for the index to hit (the 12'j percent declin point) before dumping thei slocks? Conversely, if market index rose from S2i a market "bottom" many traders would wait urn it reached 835.31 before bogir ning to buy stock? You must remember tha any formula which become too successful must coutei the seeds of its own destrui lion. (If everybody decided ti keep their cars in the garagi on Sunday and, instead go ti the beach on Tuesdays it order to avoid heavy traffic. Further complications: I you go back any length o time over the market charts you will find many instances where a sale after a 10 percen or 15 percent market decline represented a sell-out at the bottom and failure to share in the subsequent advance. You will also find man> instances where a purchase after a 10 or 15 percent re covery from a low only served to get you into the market at a high price and at the begin- ning of another decline. Further complications II You can't buy the Dow-Jones or the Standard and Poor's or any other average. Fortunes have been made in individual slocks which have risen while the general market was easing or going nowhere. Further complications III: A "bottom" or a "high" be- comes crystal clear only after the fact. We have had a lot of "bottoms" established in recent months which led only to new and lower "bottoms." I know this is a negative ipproach and I apologize for H. I do admit that formulas are used by experts and often successfully, but they are used in conjunction with other signs and portents and always against the background of years of experience. I don't mean to pooh-pooh all chartist or fundamentalist rules and theories and for- mulas. Far from it. I just don't want any reader to be left with the impression that if he blindly follows any single specific formula he will land on Easy Street. Is there any relation be Iween the stock and bond av- erages? A It was once a popular market maxim that the prices of high-grade bonds and stocks moved in opposite directions. In recent years, steadily rising interest rates have depressed bond prices. And runaway inflation, un- favorable balances of trade, weakness in the dollar, politi- cal upheavals and fears and uncertainty over the future of business have depressed stock prices too. It "ain't" the classic answer, tint there it is. Proxy Statement: Informa- tion which the SEC requires must be submitted to share- holders as a prerequisite to seeking their votes for a meet- ing. Often these statements are carelessly thrown aside by investors even though they contain information (salaries, stockholdings of officers and directors, etc.) which many investors indicate they would like to have. More than caves have been discovered in Greece, Kill of which are considered to lie of scientific and tourist inter- est.
