Cedar Rapids Gazette (Newspaper) - March 10, 1974, Cedar Rapids, Iowa Increased Participation Seen for Area Science Fair Increased participation by Cedar Rapids students in this year’s Eastern Iowa Science fair was indicated Saturday by fair officials    as they issued    a reminder    that the final    entry deadline is only a week away. Fair Director James Gibbs, a science    teacher at Jefferson high school, said the fair has received both more early entries and more teacher inquiries from Cedar Rapids schools than in previous years. Entries for the 15th annual science    fair must be    post marked by next Sunday, March 17. Mailing address is the East ern Iowa Science fair, Box 1032, Cedar Rapids 52406. Entry blanks, which have been distributed to science teachers throughout Eastern Iowa, are also available at the same address. The 1974 exposition will be held April 6-7 in the Washington high school gymnasium with biological and physical science competition in both senior (grades 10-12) and junior (grades 7-9) divisions. Vander Sanden will receive the Eagle Scout award during a troop 9 court of honor Monday at 7 p.m. at Calvin Sinclair United Presbyterian church. Vander Sanden, 17, is the son of Mr. and Mrs, Gerald Vander Sanden, 3847 Tomahawk trail SE. He joined the Boy Scouts in Omaha in 1968, then joined troop 9 when he moved to Cedar Rapids. He later transferred to troop 12. He has served as assistant patrol leader, den chief, patrol leader, and troop instructor. He currently is junior assistant Scoutmaster. Vander Sanden has earned the mile-swim award three years, has 22 merit badges, has attended Camp Cedars at Omaha for two years and Camp Wakonda for three years. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow. A member of All Saints (church, he is a junior at Washington high school where he has been an active debater. He is night manager at Burger King.
