Watkins Resident George Smith Dies WATKINS A retired Wat- kins farmer and carpenter George H. Smith, 82, died Sun- day in a Cedar Rapids hospital following a long illness. He was born July near Norway. Surviving are his wife, Kate, whom he married Jan. 21, 1913, at Norway; eight children, Hu- bert of Sacramento, Claif., Mar- garet Ferris of League City, Texas, Colette Gerling of Media- polis, George, jr., and Paul ol Cedar Rapids, Edward of Nor- way, Rose Bratton of Burlington and Velma Gavin of El Paso; Texas; 26 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Mineard of Watkins; two sisters, Elizabeth Etscheidl and Cleo Smith, both of Wat- kins, and one stepsister. There- sa Wilson, Brownsville, Texas. Services: Tuesday at 10 St. Patrick's Catholic church. The Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Monday at the George Brosh residence, Norway. Second Young Tria I Ends In Hung Jury IOWA CITY For the second me, a Johnson county district ourt jury was unable to reach verdict in the case of a Cedar Rapids man charged with rape. James Alan Young, 20, was larged in connection with the ape of a Coralville woman on Jay 28. The woman reportedly was aducted at gunpoint from a oralville laundromat and driv- n to a camping area in West owa City where the alleged in- ident occurred. Young was ar- ested May 31 at his home in edar Rapids. Young's first trial, which nded Dec. 2, resulted in a hung ury. Preliminary indications are mt the county attorney will not efile charges in the case. Mechanicsville Protests Cut in Revenue Sharing MECHANICSVILLE The city council last Friday turned over to the city attorney infor- mation dealing With the city's per quarter cut in reve- nue sharing.. The action came after Mayor Tom Railsback read letters from both the federal office of revenue sharing and the Cedar county auditor. The auditor said that all re- ports had been sent to the feder- al office well before the dead- line. However, the government maintains that the cut will be made because a report was not received in time. The council also took under advisement the possibility of a new city shed to house city equipment and a workshop. A presentation on building ideas was made by West Liberty Builders.
