and will do honor to Fort Wayne abroad In a New Bole For several seasons Miss Nellie McHenry has buen well and favorably known as a rollicking and exceedingly vivacious exponent of farce comedy To all she seemed content with dis harging a merry laugh and a be vitching little kick But in her soul here was the germ of ambition ellie McHenry longed to show the public that she was capable of better ork than that of the mere entertain er To gratify her ambition several lays were tiied but none proved worthy of her and it seemed that she must remain in the farce comedy groove During her engagement in San Francisco last summer a new protean play bearing the title Chain lightning was brought to her by its author The title caught her fancy it seemed very appropriate for Miss McHenry herself is as quick as Chain lightning The play was read and approved and given a trial during the ast week of the San Francisco en jragement when its success was in stauaneous Miss McHenry is given abundant opportunity to show her versatility as she appears in five distinct roles The Wild Rose inown as Chain Lightning Fraulein Gretchen a German emigrant Car Lotte an Italian street singer and the aeiress of the Golconda mine In each character Miss McHenry intro duces appropriats songs and dances The scenes of the play are laid in Southern California and Mexico Special scenery painted from original sketches obtained in Mexico showing a typical Mexican ranche is carried for the second act The costumes are rich and picturesque The support ing company contains John Webster of Troubadour fame Frank law it appears that justice is being feaufully avenged in hia case The old man was arrested over one year ago charged with attempting to de fraud the owner of a note against him for He denied any intention to defraud his creditors and set up that he lost all his earthly possessions some though a misfortune but failed to sustain his position and was thrown into prison until the debt is satisfied His board is paid in ad vance by the parties causing his arrest who claim that he can pay the debt if he feels so disposed On the other hand the old man insists that he nas nothing with which to pay and no rospects that he aver will Well advanced in years and broken down in health the close confinement is rap dly shortening his earthly existence Che complainants against him appear relentless and according to the opinion of the county physician the old man is aying the debt with his life Fearful of Their Water Supply Richmond Telegram The trustees of the Southern Insane Hospital have not evinced half the enterprise that characterized the work done in get ting the Eastern hospital open and now they still persist in saying they are afraid to open for patients lest their limited having a lucrative position in the office of the New York and Pennsylvania road It is thought however that he is not out of the base ball circle and that he will play again next year The Vandalia road proper extends from East St Louis to the Indiana State line 158 miles It was char tered in 1865 and opened for business in 1870 It was leased to the Terre Haute ife Indianapolis railroad com pany on account of itself and the Pittsburg Cincinnati St Louis road and the Chicago St Louis Pitts burg which jointly guarantee the first mortgage bonds and of the second mortgage bonds the obliga tion of the Pittsburg Cincijnati St Louis in this respect being guaranteed by the Pennsylvania railroad company In the latter clause is where the interest of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company is manifest The lease is for 999 years at a rental of 30 per cent of the gross earnings in creasing to 35 per cent as expenses may fall below 70 per cent As yet the expenses have never been below 70 per cent as the improvements have been so great as to absorb all sur plus above that figure The suit spoken of was begun in 1887 by the lesser company to declare the lease void The United States Circuit Court decided in favor of the validity of the lease and on this the Penn sylvania Company appealed and it was taken to the United States Su preme Court where it now rests neither party showing any disposition to push it It is believed however that should the Pennsylvania Com pany see any advantage in pushing the case in its efforts to secure con trol of the Terre Haute Indianapolis road it will do so Is
