appointed traveling freight and passenger agent for the Ohio Valley road with head quarters at Evansville Ind The Chicago Alton road bus agreed to suspend action on its notice of a proposed reduction in lumber and coal rates between Chicago and Kan sas City H C Norton purchasing agent of the Philadelphia Reading road has resigned Mr Norton was formerly purchasing agent of the Qhio Indiana Western road President King of the Erie has authorized General Superintendent Tucker of the N Y P O lines to advance the pay of men in the train service to the basis paid on competing and adjacent roads General Manager St John had hard ly entered into his office on his return from a four weeks rest on the Pacific coast before he was waited upon by a committee of train employes demand ing an increase of wages President Fish and several directors of the Illinois Central road in two cars and George M Pullman of the Pullman Car Company in his private car went east yesterday morning over the Pennsylvania line via Bradford Mr Hiram White Pan Handle dis patcher who is east on a two weeks vacation will return to work Monday Marquis de Lafayette Ryan is working Mr Whites trick during the the same road The case of Martin who was charged with a violation of the inter state commerce law by selling tickets below the established rate was before the grand jury while Hewitt and Brine were charged with contempt for not producing certain papers be fore the grand jury The decision of Judge Ricks iefers the case of Martin o the Interstatecommerce commis sion who may investigate it and if it is found that there was a willful viola tion of the law further action in the courts may follow An Indianapolis News man caught the following wail as it floated upward on the ambient air from the jury will be called upon to do its duty in the matter The sever est penalty known to the law should be applied in this case The girl so far as known always de ported herself in a becoming and lady
