Tribune staff writer Howard County Sheriff John Beatty said that despite the con siderable time he is spending run ning for he is adequate ly fulfilling his commitment to serve as a is trying to unseat Republican Steve Buyer in the 8 Beatty admitted he has probably divided his time between serving as sher iff and running for Con gress since he announced his candidacy last Sep The statement came in response to county phone records obtained by the Kokomo in which Beatty has placed about 60 cam paignrelated long dis Beatty tance calls from his direct office line at the Howard County Beatty said he has paid for them all out of his own He supplied copies of two checks written to the Howard County for a total of along with an affidavit from Democratic Auditor Marilyn Cook verifying she gave her approval to reimburse the county for the Beatty defended the job hes done as sheriff and said he doesnt feel the campaign has compro mised his ability to serve out his second Any time anyone decides to run for office and they already hold an thats the first com plaint that is Beatty I dont think hes spending enough time in his regular But I am telling you our people feel confident in the job Im I havent heard the complaints from the voters not hes not They know how to get hold of my number is I carry a beeper all the But Howard County Commis sioner President David Griffey said he was alarmed at the num ber of calls when he learned of and said Beatty should have stepped down as sheriff to run for He should have taken a leave of absence if he was going to be a candi date for said a I understand he has a but if hes speak ing to a group of 500 people at a hog roast in Rensselaer or and his pager goes off because an incident has happened in Howard how effective is he going to be as sheriff Beatty said he considered taking a leave of absence but felt it would do the department more harm than since his employees are used to the way he handles issues and know they can reach him 24 hours a Griffey added that he was never informed of the arrangement between Beatty and Cook to reim burse the county for the Beatty said he didnt feel he need ed to inform the commissioners or county Cook said shed checked out the legality of the practice with the State Board of Beatty was asked whether he would consider paying back the for all the time hes spent county because I have been owed by the county for many he I have in seven and a half never one time received a dime for I do have I am entitled to Beatty said despite his admis sion that he has spent half Beatty has charged his opponent in the 5th District congressional race with similar Beatty said Steve Buyer has had legislative staff members speak repeatedly to reporters about campaignrelated In Beatty has singled out Buyers former congressional press Pat as a legislative staffer who has blurred the line between campaigning and government Hinton denied the Theres been no wrongdoing there This Hinton last week moved from Buyers congressional staff office in Washington to his campaign headquarters in where hell serve as campaign press sec retary until the 8 Hinton said he made the switch because Congress has been out of session and theres just a lot more activity in the district right He said he took an official leave of absence from the congres sional payroll on Tuesday and will didnt dampen the spir its of the volunteers who turned out Saturday for the third annual United Way Day of The event brought together area res idents to do volunteer work to kick off the annual United
