Kokomo Tribune (Newspaper) - May 8, 1994, Kokomo, Indiana Sports C4 Sunday May Kokomo Tfibune Harbaugh Colts feeling good INDIANAPOLIS AP One month after signing with the Indianapolis Colts Jim Harbaugh said he feels comfortable with the teams offense I feel real good with Harbaugh said Saturday as the Colts went through the second day of their threeday minicamp Nick Nicolau offensive coordi nator has been tutoring us for about a month and I feel way ahead of the Harbaugh signed as a free agent April 8 after being released by the Chicago Bears on March 16 Hes expected to compete with Don Majkowski for the starting job when training camp opens in July I feel real comfortable with the system Its a better system than I ve run in a couple of said Harbaugh who set club records for completions attempts and consecutive passes without an interception during his seven years with the Bears The offensive line helps a great deal because theyre very Harbaugh said when asked what makes the Colts system better than the one he worked with in Chicago recently Its more wide open It allows you to really stretch the field in a lot of different ways get three or four receivers into the He leaves an offense ranked last among the NFLs 28 clubs hoping to turn a club that had the leagues worst running game into a playoff contender Theres a chance for us to really move the ball and score some said Harbaugh who is among those impressed with the early work of running back Marshall Faulk the second pick overall in last months NFL draft Marshall looks to be the player we thought he would be He shows an extreme quickness the speed that weve lacked in the said coach Ted Marchibroda And hes shown that he has excellent hands and runs excellent Harbaugh is convinced Marchibroda is committed to mix ing the pass with an improved ground gain The Colts have ranked at the bottom of the league Jim Harbaugh in rushing throughout the 1990s With Roosevelt Potts and Marshall theres a real chance for balance and he said adding he also finds the offense a lot simpler than the one utilized by the Bears Because of the nohuddle they had to make it simpler When youre up at the line of scrim mage you cant be yelling what the play is Its got to be cooed its got to be simple Its got to be Harbaugh said Theyve made a great effort of condensing the amount of words and verbage you use Everyone learns it It makes it easier to Marchibroda said both Harbaugh and Majkowski the clubs only returning quarterback have thrown well in tne first two days of minicamp Both of them are throwing a lit tle better than I anticipated at this Marchibroda said Colts sign Arbuckle The Colts announced that tight end Charles Arbuckle who was a restricted free agent has agreed to terms for a new contract The Colts also announced the signing of free agent wide receiver Wesley Carroll and 16 other free agents The Colts also announced they have cut veteran offensive tackle Kevin Call in a costcutting mea sure Call who was with the team for 10 years would have earned in 1994 more than the team was willing to pay a backup lineman The list included defensive line man Russell Allen wide receiver Aaron Bailey offensive lineman Marc Borrelli and defensive back Todd Ericson The NFLs longest of long shots Nottage hopes to crack lineup on practice field for first time in two years By Scf ipps Howard News Service ASHBURN Va He might not be the longest longshot of the NFL draft but the odds cant be in Dexter Nottages favor Just dont tell him that The 64 273pound defensive Nottage grew up in the violent Overtown area of Miami He performed well enough at Hollywood Hills High to be recruited by Florida State and Auburn before choosing FAMU in Tallahassee He became a dominant player midway through his freshman season and his potential seemed boundless The next season he and a new line coach did not get along He says the line coach told him he had a discipline prob Nottage said he made choic es at times of school over practice 1 He had also married before the season That added to the pressures But things were soon to get worse At the end of the school year Nottage was called home because his mother was sick and forced to bed Not long afterwards his sis ter Isadora was hit by a van and had to stop working Football players find trouble with agents
