Kokomo Tribune (Newspaper) - May 8, 1994, Kokomo, Indiana Friends and relatives who once shook their heads at my intolerance for dogs now giggle at my spoiling Buster Se verely untrue Okay I hold icecream cones while Buster licks them or hand feed him ice chips in hot weather be cause they slip and slide in his bowl Buster has no handsl Yes we share sausage biscuits and cookies but only because neither of us likes dogfoodl All right maybe I no longer speak to a certain neighbor because he Busters my dogs nose was on crooked and called him Tunny And why when I am out of town is it so amusing that I ask to speak to Buster when I call home and that he goes absolutely and lick ing the hearing my voice I always had assumed dogs to be as brainless as chickens or cows Baloney Buster thinks he makes decisions and choices I dont say that he works com plicated math or speaks French though I am persuaded that he is smarter than certain politicians choreographers and talkshow hosts For instance Buster distinguishes between visitors and alerts me in specific ways When he sees me with a suitcase in my hand he immediately drops his head lies down and shuts his eyes When I cannot dis cern exactly what he wants I ask a se ries of questions he listens intently barking only when I ask the right question my hind foot This dog could go to Harvard I used to laugh when Barbara told me studies had showed that people who keep pets are calmer and even live longer than those who do not I dont laugh any more When I feel unappreciated there is always Buster to give me a friendly lick Playing with him helps take the edge off my anger selfpity or other crippling emotions Shared silences in good company can be therapeutic I feel indebted to Buster for many things not the least of which is having helped roe shed nearlifelong dog fears Maybe wed had him a year when I re alized that I actually petted other peo ples dogs asked questions about them talked to them I did not know how complete my recovery had been until one of our walks perhaps a year suddenly was at tacked and mauled by a big unleashed husky with cold clear kjUer eyes I heard my dog yipping in fright and without even thinking about consequences I counterattacked and drove the snarling husky away From that moment on I have not felt myself to be a dog wimp So thanks you too helping me in the very best sense go to the DI MAfiAIM MAY 81 PAW 19 Through swirling clouds of musket smoke the renowned Fort Henry Guard in Kingston advances to the echo of fife and drum bayonets flash cannons roar and this mag nificently restored fortress is safe once again from invaders For pageantry excitement and sheer wonder Ontario has some of the finest sights Its here of their kind anywhere In our nearby capital Ottawa youll find North Americas oldest oper ating lock ways and one of the worlds largest collections of vintage airplanes Or cruise the Thousand Islands and see the worlds smallest inter national bridge For your free Information package call 1800ONTARIO If youre out for adventure youre in for a surprise ONTARIO CANADA 1
