Kokomo Tribune (Newspaper) - May 8, 1994, Kokomo, Indiana Sports Sunday May Kokorho TribuneIG Expanding baseballs Borders Major League dream is alive LOS ANGELES AP Ila Bor ders has dreamed of pitching in the major leagues since she was 10 Now 19 she believes more than ever that she can turn that fantasy into reality Pact if she ever signs a tract and pitches in the minor leagues much less the majors shed be the first woman to play in a professional baseball game It doesnt really matter if youre a woman out said Borders about to complete her freshman year at Southern Cali fornia College in nearby Costa Mesa If youre an alien and can get people out somebody will sign you Ive always had people telling me I cant now people are saying I can Its up to me right now and thats whats On Feb 15 the lefthanded Bor ders became the first woman to pitch a college game against men and was an immediate success She pitched a fivehit complete game as Southern California Col lege beat ClaremontMudd 121 Statistically that was her high water mark but her coach has deemed her freshman year a suc cess With the season nearly over Borders has a 24 record with a ERA She has started seven games and appeared twice in relief allowing 48 hits and 25 runs 16 of them earned in 49 13 innings of work She has walked 16 and struck out six A great year Certainly not But as a freshman pitching at the var sity level Borders did a decent job at the very least Shes competed very said Charlie Phillips coach of the NAIA school Shes got potential to go on Youve got to remember shes a freshman If we can get some upper body strength on her get her fastball a little quicker do a few other things eventually she might have a chance to sign Anything can happen She could go out tomorrow and boom the elbow is shot depends if someones willing to give her a chance like we gave her a Phillips said Being lefthanded you dont have to throw as hard If youre in the 80s at all and you have good control which she has and you can throw the breaking ball when youre behind in the count which she can you always have a chance to play Borders began pitching at age 10 and began taking it seriously at 10 said her father Phil She started in a minor division Ha Borders watches a game from the dugout with Southern California College coach Charlie Phillips and two teammates of Little League in La Mirada about 20 miles east of Los Ange les and was moved up to me major division shortly thereafter Usually the major division is for 11and Phil Borders said She was the only girl in the major division She was phenom in Little League By the time she was 12 she had thrown several nohitters In one game she struck out all 18 batters she Borders knew he had something special so he began preparing his daughter the oldest of four chil dren as best he could I put her in a semipro league when she was 14 to toughen up her he said She knows I put her in that league to toughen her up and play with quality play ers Taking verbal abuse you couldnt oother her with that It really doesnt faze her Theres nothing anybody can call her she already hasnt heard 100 times What do I do when Ive heard it I get out of the stands so I dont hear it Nobody would like sitting there hearing their daughter called names when she was 14 years old It Borders marveled at his daugh ters dedication I gave her an arm exercise pro gram when she was real young so she would gain arm strength and not hurt her he said In high school she would do it in the morning shed do it at noon and then she would do it at night before she would go to bed I happened to wake up at 3 oclock one morning she had set her alarm to get up and do it I didnt make her do it She started talking about play ing professionally at age had a lot of people telling me shed quit when she got high heels on Shes still doing Borders believes his daughters potential as a professional proba bly will be determined in the com ing months I think it has a lot to do with how much arm strength she can develop in the next he said As for her being intelligent and knowing howto pitch she defi nitely knows how to pitch Id like to see her develop the sinker a lit tle Ila Borders agreed This summer Im taking she said Im just going to work on developing arm strength more I have the control now hitting my spots Im going to work on devel oping more strength by doing long toss lifting little weights and doing isometrics so I can gain strength not bulk My goal is to gain 5 miles per hour on my fastball from right now to September From high school to now Ive gained five miles Every gun says differently but the consensus is right around 80 Thats what Im work ing Ila Borders said shes not out to break ground for women in pro fessional baseball the way Jackie Robinson opened the sport for blacks in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers Thats something I want to stay away she said I just want to be a baseball player If I can help girls out who are out there for the right reason that would be an honor to do that But only if theyre out there for the right reason Jackie Robinson is one of my heroes He was a great man he II OUTDOOR POWER EQUIPMENT
