Kokomo Tribune (Newspaper) - May 8, 1994, Kokomo, Indiana Market activity Sunday Kokomo Tribune 811 troubled by utility stocks retreat NfiW YORK AP stocks have been steadily ing casting feat into the heatts of stock maricet analysts who believe these issues are a hatbingef of highef interest rates and further weaknessonWaliStreet Theyre crushing these Dudley Bppei senior stoek trader at Donaldson Lufkin Jenrette etttltteg said of utility stocks day The decline is one of many indi cations that interest rates are ihg up whether we like it or nesaid Utility stocks have fallen about 16 percent since last September a bigger drop than their 13 percent decline before the big market crash in 1987 notes Hugh Johnson first Albany market strategist The Dow Jones average of 15 ity companies closed Friday at down or percent The average has fallen about 19 percent from its peak of about near the end of last year That pares with a drop of about 8 per cent in the Dow Jones industrials and 14 percent in the Dow Jones transportation average from their peaks earlier this year The Dow utility average fell to the low 190s in early April then at tempted a recovery rising to about 203 m midApril That prompted a little optimism mostly in the bond inarket that the current stock mar ket correctionmight be over But the April rally was short lived and utility issues quickly be gan sinking again 1 saw nothing that suggested overall that the bottom was in said James Schroeder mar ket analyst at MM9 International in Chicago 1 found it a bit amusing that bond people were pointing to utilities and saying here we go this is Thats ludicrous consid ering how far its fallen Since the April low it has done Schroeder is among those who believe utility stocks are pointing the way to a lower overall stock market Theyre very successful they never miss as a market indicator said Thorn Brown market strate gist at Rutherford Brown Cathe rwoodinPhiladelphia When you get a big selloff in utilities the stock market is bound to follow in its en tirety at some point It can take as much as six months sometimes Johnson said movements in util ity stocks do not necessarily antici pate interest rate moves but rather coincide with them But as a leading indicator for stock market directions utility stocks are very much on target Johnson agreed Utilities began de clining well before major market downturns in and 1982 he said Utility issues are leading indica tors for one main reason utility companies have high construction costs that require them to borrow heavily in the capital markets That means they are very sensitive to in terest rate increases Ultimately higher interest rates usually cut into the profits of most corporations sending the entire market lower On Friday the DoW Jones indus trial average fell to bringing its loss for the week to Broad market indexes also fell The NYSEs composite index de clined to down for the week The Nasdaq index lost to losing for the week At the American Stock Ex change the market value index re treated to off for the week The Standard Poors 500 index lost to down for the week The Wilshire Associates Equity Index which is the market value of NYSE American and OTC issues ended the week at trillion off billion from last week A Sear ago the index was tril on 1 Local stocks 20421 23Ad20A 23 t1 ConAgr
