Kokomo Tribune (Newspaper) - March 14, 1994, Kokomo, Indiana Vol 143 No 190 KOKOMO Kokomo Ind Monday March 50 cents Tipton schools fate in the air UPTON Ind Tipton School Corp officials are hoping for pub lic input during an open forum at 7 Tuesday at Tipton High Schools cafeteria as they consider the fate of Lincoln Elementary School The school built in 1953 is in need of major repair and renova tion according to Assistant Super intendent Bob Schultz Currently 275 thirdand fourthgrade pupils attend Lincoln Elementary 421 Ash St According to a recent study of the facility in order to bring the building into compliance with current codes for construction health and safety the foundation exterior and interior walls win dows exterior doors rest rooms ceilings and floors heating venti lating plumbing fire alarm sound and master clock systems would need repaired renovated or replaced In addition to the repairs and renovation in order to meet the educational needs of the pupils and adhere to state and federal guidelines an additional square feet would need to be con structed at Lincoln Elementary The addition would accommodate a media center physical education space and art classes A group of Tipton officials com Eiled a list of four options for the incoln school building Complete the renovations and construct an addition at Lincoln Keep Lincoln School operating until Washington Elementary School is renovated and capable of handling the extra students Close Lincoln after the 1993 1994 school year and use relocat able classrooms until Washington is renovated Or close Lincoln after this school year and begin yearround schooling for Tipton elementary school students Improvements are needed at the schools other facilities Washing ton ElementaryTipton Middle School and Tipton High School The following improvements to Washington ElementaryTipton Middle School and Tipton High School apply with each of the above four options for Lincoln At Washington ElementaryTip ton Middle School the mechani cal heating ventilating plumbing and electrical systems need upgrades to meet current codes Also an addition of approximate ly square feet at Washing ton Elementary and square feet at the Middle School would be considered The additional space at Wash ington Elementary is needed to expand the library cafeteria physical education facilities and computer lab The additional space at the Mid dle School is needed for a girls athletic locker room in order to meet Title IX requirements Tipton High School needs the same minor upgrades to various systems such as electrical and plumbing as Washington Ele mentary and the Middle School Plus in order to meet require ments of the Tech Prep program upgrade the agricultural program and add on a girls athletic locker room an addition of square feet is needed Tipton school officials will not be deciding the fate of Lincoln Ele mentary during the meeting Hold steady TIPTON Ind Jackson Township firefight er Greg McCullough holds a wrestle Shes about as tough as they come TOKYO AP It might not have the prestige of an offer from Disney or Revlon But one Japan ese businessman says Tonya Harding has just the image hes looking for Tonya was made to be a pro Takashi Matsunaga chairman of the All Japan Wom ens Professional Wrestling Asso ciation said today Shes about as tough as they come and shell last a lot longer in our sport than she will in figure Matsunaga says hes willing to pay Harding million to get into the ring If thats what Disneys paying Nancy Kerrigan thats what well pay Tonya even if I have to go into debt to do he said A representative of the wrestling association has been sent to Oregon to make Harding an offer Matsunaga said He said he hopes to meet Harding while she is in Japan for the World Fig ure Skating Championships which begin outside Tokyo next week Both mens and womens pro fessional wrestling are popular in Japan Wrestlers have been known to record hit songs and become fixtures on variety first but I think she can learn to be a heroine as Harding has received almost daily coverage in Japans media since allegations surfaced that she was involved in an attack on Ker rigan in January Hardings former husband has pleaded guilty to complicity in the attack and has told investigators Harding knew and approved of the plan in advance Harding has denied being involved Kerrigan who won the silver figureskating medal at the Olympics has signed lucrative endorsement deals with Disney and Revlon She is also a spokes woman for Reebok and Campbell Soup Harding has yet to land any Indiana University cream andcrimson casket is a good sell er says Marty Gaede owner of Gaede Casket Company an Indi anapolis firm that makes college oriented panels for the caskets It comes in a crimson color and its got white pinstripes on it with white vinyl swingbar Gaede said The interior is ivory velvet and it comes with the choice of either a neutral panel or one that says Indiana Hoosiers That one has a basketball going through a hoop andnet combination Its really a neat he said Jerry Ellenwood of Day Mortu ary in Bloomington said he has sold three or four Indianacolored caskets since they became avail able last summer Comparable caskets in black and gold for Purdue University fans also are available The casket is manufactured by Oak Grove International of Manis tee which specializes in fiberglass caskets We dont make them with col leges in mind but some of the col ors are somewhat indicative of certain company presi dent Jim Kieszkowski said Actually one of our customers in Texas does the same thing for the Texas he said The colors are approximately the Gaede remembers a recent funeral You should have seen it Everything was IU colors inside the funeral he said Including the Art Safer at Allen Funeral Home is not surprised by the concept Weve had a lot of people over the years who are obviously big fans Theyll want to be buried with their IU sweater on his 9th life By TOM CAREY Tribune Style editor After about 18 years Freds marathon life is over Fred the cat recently ended all his nine lives following several years at South Side Marathon 2105 St Customers always wanted to see one of Kokomos most famous felines said station owner Mike Rethlake He was a good Fred had called the station nestled at the southwest corner of Washington Street and Boulevard home since the mid70s He arrived at the site under the hood of a car The kitten battered after it had crawled under there for warmth was taken in by Vern Reth lake That man the pre vious owner and Mikes father nursed the kitten back to health and named him after the Red Skelton character Freddie the Fred In return Fred let the Rethlakes take care of him for nearly the next 20 years And customers adopted him as quickly as the Rethlakes did It was always young kids and ladies who were most concerned about Mike said Customers used to always bring him canned food special little gifts at Christ mas even Customer John Hall would bring Fred milk every morning and oversaw the cats care as the feline grew older Mike said The creature who frequently was found lounging in the busi ness front window became well known to the Rethlakes many customers He also was fea tured in an April 1990 Kokomo Tribune article Fred might disappear for two or three days but that was when he was Mike said And he would always return Vern retired from the business in the early 90s But Fred remained And grew older Mike said Fred suffering from an abscessed tooth was taken to the veterinarian a while back He returned home minus a tooth and his appetite He failed to recover and subsequent visits to the vet revealed his kidneys were He received treatment includ ing intravenous fluids without results As Fred wasnt going to recover Mike said the animal was put to sleep about three to four weeks ago The station owner said he considered burying his furry friend on the banks of the nearby Wildcat one of Freds favorite stomping grounds Instead Mike said the creature was cremated Many customers were dis tressed to learn of Freds passing They dont like Mike said even had one customer send me a sympathy card she said she knew what its like to lose a cat especially one as great as Fred I thought that was real Another customer told the Kokomo Tribune she hasnt yet revealed to her daughter news of Freds death Some folks may wonder if Fred did anything other than lounge roam and serve as informal public relations for the station But Mike notes a week after Fred departed we found a mouse in the station that tells you ;
