Anderson's East Lime Avenue home, one of the oWest residence in Monrovia, now belongs U> the citizens of this town. Through a grant of authorized by the California Community Foundation, the Friends of .the Monrovia Public Library has been able to purchase this historic "homestead (rom the foun- dation's trustee, Security Pacific National Bank. The history of Monrovia, Security Pacific Bank, the California Community' Foundation. And the life of George Anderson are uni- quely Interwoven and come to light in the deeding of the Anderson home. To fully appreciate the coincidence of this story, the pages of Monrovian history must be turned back. In 1887, a young lawyer and aspiring banker from Iowa, Joseph Francis Sar- tori, co-founded the First National Bank of Monrovia and served as its first cashier. In the same year, the rapidly expanding community of Monrovia incorporated and Joseph Sartori won the townd treasurer's seat. In the spring of 1888, Salori relinquished is post as cashier of the First National Bank of Monrovia (although he still retained the office of vice president) and moved to Los Angeles where he formed the Los Angeles Loan and Trust Co. Soon, this was expanded to the Security Savings Bank and Co. a direct of today.1 s Pacific Bank. .'-V- William Newton the mian after whom the town is named, in 1887 hired John C. Anderson of Ohio to build the booming town's first hotel. While building the Mills Hotel (which has been known as both the i Monrovia Hotel and the John Anderson also constructing a home lor his family on East Lime Avenue. It was this modest residence in which his son George lived from childhood until his death at 87, July 10, 1973. Arcadia Firm'" WinsConlract For Library An Arcadia firm has received a contract for construction of a Los Angeles County Library facility in Diamond Bar. Robert J. Hassett, the winning contractor, sub- mitted a bid of the lowest of 10 received. Construction will consist of a one-story, square-foot library which will house -adult and children's reading areas, a multipur- pose room, staff workroom and lounge, public and staff restrooms, and the librarian's office.
