By Jean Cole jcan^a thcnsnews -co uricr.com Three Elkmont girls — ages 11, 12 and 13 — charged with stealing $400 worth of art supplies from a portable classroom at Elkmont High School, told authorities they were just walking around when one thing led to another. “They said they had been out walking and had seen someone in the parking lot, so they hid in the unlocked building, then when they left they decided to steal a bunch of stuff,” said Limestone County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Stanley Mc-Natt. Missing from the classroom are paintbrushes, glue sticks and bottles, markers, pencil sharpeners, gel pens and other items, he said. The trio apparently used the markers to draw graffiti on the outside of a classroom window, Mc-Natt said. A school surveillance camera captured them walking around the building around 7:30 or 8 p.m. Thursday, he said. The door to the classroom may have been unlocked because there were no .signs of forced entry, he said. The girls — one an Elkmont student and two home-schooled — are charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree criminal mischief, records show. They were returned to the custody of their parents after their arrests, McNatt said. The News Courier has withheld their names because they are juveniles.
