Anthony “Cilen” Browm, 45, of 18767 McWilliams St. at www.enew9courier.com is undergoing treatment in the hospital’s surgical in-tensive-care unit for two stab wounds to the back, said a hospital spokeswoman and Limestone County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Stanley McNatt. Witnesses said Brown’s wife — 37-year-old Frances Vernell Thompson — stabbed Brown Tuesday night after the two fought about her letting others drink his half-gallon bottle of Heaven Hill bourbon whiskey, McNatt said. Courthouse renovations featuring Seibert s woodwork nearly ready By Karkn MiDui.K'iON utlit'itsix'w s-('t)iiri(‘r.C(>m When limestone County showcases its courthouse renovations in mid-January, visitors should note County Commission Chairman David Seibert’s woodworking. Seibert used in-house and inmate labor to save the county as much as $6 million for renovations that were estimated to cost $8 million. But woodworking is a hobby of Seibert’s as well as a cost-saving measure. Sometimes achieving a desired effect takes a bit of country ingenuity, such as bending a piece of Ocik to fit a curve. “We needed the molding to bend with the curve,’’ said Seibert, pointing out the bottom of a first-floor staircase. The staircase slightly flares out as it reaches the bottom. To fashion a replacement piece of bottom molding would have required piecing, and Seibert didn’t like the looks of that. The commission entered a contract to pay Chevron Energy Solutions Co. $1,981,455 over 20 years to lower energy consumption and reduce operation and maintenance costs in county buildings. County Commission Chairman David Seibert said the county would use funding to install new lighting, commodes, and air-conditioning units in all county facilities to help cut an annual $480,000 the’county now spends on utilities. “We will save an estimated $94,000 per year,” said Seibert. “We will pay the bond debt with the savings.” The commission also suspended rules to accept a $1,000 North Alabama Highway Safety Oflicer grant, which will go to the Sheriff’s Department to pay for holiday overtime. In other business, the commission suspended rules to hire Donna Mattox as title clerk in the License Commissioner’s Office and Robert Whitt Johnson as a county corrections officer. According to Mac W. Martin, Jr., a planner in Engineering Services and Community Development, the city of Athens is now using the online messaging service Twitter to convey information to the public. One recently issued “tweet” concerns the holiday schedule for garbage and leaf pickup for the weeks of Dec. 21-25 and Dec. 28-Jan. 1. A complete schedule can also be found on the city's Web site; www.athensal.us . “Twitter gives the city the ability to pass information quickly by posting announcements on a message board,” said Martin. “Other Twitter users connected to the city's profile can receive updates on their message boards and cell phones.” The city also offers news and information through its Web site and e-announcements service, Martin said.
