And while most would call determination a positive trait, in the case of a concrete canoe competition, it is only a small portion of what’s needed to stay afloat — much less to win.  Wise, an Ardmore native, is on the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s team in a contest to see which engineering students can build a boat out of concrete, then beat the competition in a race.  “I’m really excited,” Wise said. “I started about six weeks before regionals and I just fell in love with it. It’s a great wav to stay  See Canoe, page 5A  Athens man honored as father of the year  An Athens dad has been named Father of the Year for 2009 by Hands On Greater Huntsville, the volunteer center of Madison County.  Described as a model father by the man who nominated him, David McLin, a longtime Athens resident with two sons — 14-year-old James and 12-year-old Jerrott — recently received the award at a gala in Huntsville.
