My sister had her baby in Athens, all the staff were great, considerate and helpful. The rooms were clean and beautiful.  We could not have had a more pleasant stay not to mention her doctor — Dr. Pitman.  He made sure my sister was well taken care of.  Hey, Sound Off:  About the exit exam: These young people did not have just one test! They had five different chances to pass this exit_ exam and failed.  I went to Tanner High and we took the test also, only 42 out of 45 students got to walk because of it. This was 1991. No one cried about that.  They should have taken it more seriously after the first time they failed it and not waited till the last minute to cry foul. Anna, a little girl from California, has been returned to her father’s family thousands of miles from a couple in Athens who planned to adopt her at the w ishes of the girl’s mother, Ilene Hill.  Glona Allred, who was the attorney for Amber Frey during Scott Peterson’s murder trial, flew to North Alabama and gave a press conference today in Madison about the case.  Ilene Hill was arrested for putting the child up for adoption without the father’s permission. The nationally known attorney, here on behalf of Hill, said she believes the woman acted properly when she gave custody of Anna to Brian and Dawn Barlow.  The Barlows have already adopted Anna’s younger half-sister, whom they have had from birth. They most recently tried to adopt Anna after Hill contacted them to do so. But not long after the Barlows brought Anna to her new home, the girl’s father, Jesse Baldizan, said he wanted Anna back  See Adoption, Page 3A  Idol threat  Bo Bice’s cousin talks about his chances tonight in ‘Idol’ finale  By Kelly Kazek  kelly@athensnens-courier.com   Bo Bice keeps his bags packed.  Since the beginning of this season’s “American Idol” competition, Bice has awaited each show’s tally, ready to catch the next plane home r.o Alabama.  “Idol” had no room for long-haired Southern boys, he figured.  It showed little affinity for rockers.  But the show — and its judges — made way for Bice’s brand of music.  He performed in the final competition Tuesday night and will know tonight if he is America’s new rock idol.  But whether he wins or is named the runner-up, it’s time for Bice to unpack his bags.  He is in Hollywood to stay, if he chooses. A record deal is all but guaranteed. Gartman’s contract terminated  Board dismisses Piney principal  By Tashia Lovell  tashia@athensnews-i on ricecom The Limestone County School Board voted Tuesday morning to terminate the probationary contract of Piney Chapel Elementary School Principal Dr. Pat Gartman.  Gartman was transferred to Piney Chapel for the 2004-’05 school year from Creekside Elementary School after parents signed a petition to have her removed.  Board members began receiving complaints about Gartman soon after her arrival at Piney Chapel, but another group of parents at the school praised the principal’s methods.  Karen Pressnell, a parent of students at Piney Chapel, addressed the board and spoke of the positive things Gartman had done at the  See Principal, Page 2A  Report puts nuclear plant in ‘green level’  By Tanjie Nash   tanjie@athensnews-courier.com  It’s “Greenlight, go” for Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, according to an annual report prepared by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.  A public meeting was held Tuesday afternoon at Browns Ferry between Tennessee Valley Authority officials and NRC representatives. The purpose of the meeting, according to NRC Branch Chief Steve Cahill, was for NRC and TVA to share results of annual assessments with the public.  No one from the general public attended the meeting, during which Cahill described the NRC monitoring process for nuclear reactors and read from a March 2 letter detailing the annual inspection report for Browns Ferry.  “Browns Ferry Units 2 and 3 operated in a manner that preserved public health and safety and fully met all cornerstone objec-  News-Courier/Kim Rynders  ‘American idol’ airs tonight on Fox 54.
