Journal staff writer Masonite executives have denied any laxity in reporting fuel and chemical spills at the Ukiah blaming ambiguities in environ mental law for a lack of communication between them and the countys environmental health Plant Manager Bob Andzulis said the 22 which caused a 6inch layer of fuel oil to appear in a monitoring well last occurred in a containment area around a fuel tank when a Masonite employee left a refueling operation Because the fuel oil is Andzulis plant decided it would not leak put of the con area and did not report it as a harmful We at the time had no reason to believe it was going to flow he It is a very viscous substance which usually sits on top of the ground We dont know why it flowed so Toe fuel oil did escape into groundwater outr side the containment area and Masonite is now under orders by the State Water Quality Control Board to determine the extent of contamination and clean it The key is were not trying to cover any thing Andzulis adding the company did report to the state when oil showed up in the monitoring The law is very ambiguous because it leaves it up to the company to decide what to do But we did do something and were going to continue to do what needs to be done to rectify the Andzulis Maybe were a little but I think the system allows us to be he Andzulis took over as the Ukiah plant mana ger soon after the discovery last February that chemicals from the plant had leaked into the Russian Since according to he has overseen renovations designed to keep an leak from happening He said he has also been trying to change the opin ion of Masonite as a bad actor by strengthen ing relationships with local and state and encouraging employees to take care with plant But environmental health engineer Randy Leach reiterated his view Monday that Maso nite still does not report significant fuel and chemical spills which occur at the In a letter to Masonite which has also been referred to the Mendocino County District Attorneys Leach asks for more infor mation on three incidents Q The overfilling in August of a fuel tank which resulted in a spill of about gallons of a type of fuel according to Masonite some of which showed up in a groundwater monitoring well in late Q An unspecified quantity of lubricating grease found buried on the east side of plant which the company did report verbal ly to the county when workers discovered it in Q A fuel spill which occurred sometime last year near the plants diesel Leach said his department received anonymous phone reports of the spill but the company
