From 1Et)ttrf&ap H, to &&ttttDap May |6, 1702. Pranifort, May 14, THe Hoftilittes are now actually begun between the Impetialiftjand the Frqnca* tho PrinCe Lewis' of Wf had-much ado to provoke the latter thereunto. Upon hit arrival at Langencandel, the French retired from (everal Pofts without offering to make any refiftance, and our Parties went as far a* the Glacis of Landau, and infultcd their Guards without any. oppoficion. The PrinCJ feeing that fAis affront w not fufficient to anger theEuemy, he caufed one of their Gtrps de Guarde, wherein they had a Lieutenant and 1 y men to bs attacked; but the Enemy retired without rmkiflfg any refiftance, and the Lieutenant 'and 1 Soldiers were made Prifoners. The next day the Imperials attacked another Corps de Guarde, and purfued the Enemy to the very Gates of Landau; whereupon the Governor fired 13 Volleys of Cannon upon, our Men, but without doing them any harm. The French have endeavoured fince that time to regain thofe pods, but have been beaten with lofs, and hive fuffereu that place to bo fo ftreightned, that their numerous Garrifon mult needs in a little time want feveral necefftries. Prince Lewis has or -dered to fortify Croon fVeyJfenburg, from whence they have drawn a Line to Che Rhine, which renders it im-polUble for the French to come to the, relief of Landau by the way of Alface j and the Germans have en-trencheJ in the Mountains at Antwcler, which is the only pifs whereby the Enemy could come by the way of Lorrain. Prince Levis' of Baden has, been at Ofenburgh, to review the Troops of Suabia, which were encamped there, and part of 'em are polled in the Limes and Redoubts on this fide the Rhine* and the reft are marched to the Imperial Camp. Prince Lewis his caufed a Bridge to bs hid on the Rhine]aixt Berg, Whereby his Troops at Langtneandd and orher parts on the other lide of that River have a free communication wii!i thofe in the Lines and the latter may be in few hoars reinforced, in cafe the French fhould pifs the Rhine, as rhey did in the late War with fo much fac eels; but now by means of the Line aforeliid the Troops on this fide may be fo reinforced as to be able to flop the French, and cover the Country ofSua&id, without obliging the main Army to Quit their enterprizs on the other fide of the Rhine. According to our lair Letters *rom Vienna, the departure of the King of trie Remans was fixed to the i jth inftant, by which time'tis believed the Imperial Army will have received conlidsrable reinforcements. Paris, May i j. The War being now a&ually begun, and the King being obliged to greater expences than were thought of at firft, to carry on the fa-ne with vigour, the Ordinary and Extraordiairy Revenues prove not fufncient to anf^ver th-5 fame, and therefore the Council of Finances is daily taken upa-boutfinding.new ways to raife more Money. They have hid recourfe to their old expe-iient of Taxing Mis>iftratas and even Parliaments ; but this flopping but a little hole, they have, as \vt ne.ir, refolded upon feveral other Taxe*.
