Foreign Gleanings Not$ group itself into compact lines, radiating to and from a few definite foci, or centres of distribution. The position and relative importance of these traffic foci is determined by a process of natural selection, the operative factors being such as the convergence of leading thoroughfares or great railway lines, or proximity to places of public resort for business or pleasure. Nowhere are these natural reservoirs of traffic more definitely marked than in London, The Bank, the Post Office, Charing Cross, Piccadilly and Oxford Circuses, the Elephant and Castle, the termini of the three Great Northern lines, Aldgate, the Angel-these are the natural strategic centres from which alone the Metropolitan traffic could be adequately grappled with. Analyse the routes of any average hundred individuals of the daily crowds that throng our streets and every form of conveyance ! It will be found that eighty per cent, are making for one or other of these points. And yet we find them, with one or two exceptions, occupied only by the most antique and inefficient mode of transit existent-the omnibus. It is impossible that any public system of conveyance can be contrived which should deposit every one at his exact destination without sacrificing rapidity of transit; yet that is the ideal standard towards which all should be designed to approximate.
