Numb. $6tt* The FARMER's Fifth Letter to the Proteftants of Ireland. �URING the Silence of my Friend, I had juft prepared to addrefs him with fbnae Observations, which had QCcaned touching his Hiftory of the Bees i when, without perceiving my Intentions, he proceeded. ' When the Queen of the Bees ' obfervcd.to what a fuddenStrength 4 and Maturity this Infant of Rebel-' lion was grow* j flie conjectured, that other Events * might alfo fpeedily come to pais, which, till now, had ap-�peared altogether impoffible. ' t to defend, but to aboliih their own Rights j and hazard their Lives to facrifice, what every Bee, fince the Creation of the World, would have facrificed his Life wpreferve. Great Powers! they take up Arms againft "a Prince who would fave them j and their Prince takes up Arms, merely to prevent them from working their own Perdition. A glorious iEra indeed for the Prince, but moil ignominious for fuch a People ; blot it out kind Heaven from the Accounts of Time ! deliver not our Name among thy Works to Pofterity I or give us again fuch Hearts as were fenfible to Truth, return us thofe Underftandings that once were guided by Reafbn. * But wherefore is this Infatuation of the Soul; from whence can ariie this Mift that clouds our Senfes ? If we really apprehend any Danger of Encroachment on out Privileges, can that be a reafon for facrificing our Con* ftitution i if we fear the Damage of a, Part> can fuch Fear induce us to ruin the Whole ? to avoid a Spark, Ihall we leap into a Furnace ? To efcape a Shower, {hall w� plunge into the Sea ? 4 We are not all fo depraved, my Brothers, and I truft this Defection is not fo general as our Enemies look for. Truth is ftrong, and ever valiant were the Defenders thereof; Liberty I allew may be weakened by Luxury, and brought to Diffolution by Corruption, but it never was won by Arms; itmay be undermined by Treachery, but it cannot be ftormed by Force. 4 Let us put it to the Proof, Let our Nation be-number-ed, let that Number be divided into three Parts, leave two Thirds to the Difloyal and the Fearful of Heart, but fever to us one Third for the Lovers of Liberty ; again divide that Third, and one Half thereof {hall be fuffici-ent to quafh Rebellion, the other to'encounter Invafion ; One fiiall be fufficient to the Defection of our Country, and the Other to the reft of the World. * Know therefore, great Qeeen ! that whatever the Spirit of Faction may dictate^ or Flattery infiuuate to other Princes, the Spirit of Liberty is now your only Safety, as k will ever be your fureft Support. 4 Whatever may be the Original Foundation of Right in any Monarch to Dominion, Popularity can alone be the Confirmation thereof; nor is there any Power, Divine or Human, to'/upporta Prince, who appeals from the Welfare and Good-will of his People. * rjad you, great Queen, attempted, or mould you ever attempt to invade thofe Rights ef which you are confti-tuted the Guardian, or to fap that Conftitution whicii you are entrufted to fuppott; believe not what Courtiers may fay, neither hope that any Partiality of AffeSion to your facred Perfon will engage your Subjects to defend x Monarch, who makes an Aftault upon theafelves. If we are to be Slaves, it matters not to whom, the Name or Perfon of our Mailer is to us ef no farther Concern: Iniereft, thro1 all Nature, is a neceftary Motive to Action, Love generates Love, Regard begets Regard, and Protection Protection: It is this mutual Relation,through-out the World, that keeps the Whole from Diffolution, by thus connecting (he Parts : Force cannot be exerted but" by Action, nor Action but by the Will, and the Will ever was and muft be free to Eternity ; no Power in Heaven or on Earth can conftrain it, it muft be won by good Offices, for we ourfelvcs cannot compel it in your Favour. 4 Lay hold then, thou chofen Monarch! on this Prin* ciple of Liberty; preferve to us our* Freedom, that we may ever be willing, and therefore able to fight for you: Let your Goodnefs continue to beget Gratitude, and your Defeuce of our Privileges a Defence of your Dominion : So (hall you be as one great Soul, animating the whole Body of your Subjects, into the utmoft Power of a voluntary Exertion, for Advantages that redound from yeu to themfelvcs, and that are equally the Intereft of Prince and People. 4 Had you been a Tyrant, I dare not fpeak thus; as^ yet I dare greatly in-the Caufe of Liberty. . ^ '. A Tyrant is a little Creature, of a narrow Capacity and contemptible Spirit; his Thirft of Power is not Ambition, bnt Cowardice > he defites to be ftrong merely that he may be guarded, to be powerful only in order to be fafe; his Soul is too confined to receive or communicate Happinefij he fears the Attempts of others, and therefore is cruel: He has no Relilh of Merit, and there* fore feeks no Praile; he hates and perfecutes that Virtue in others, which he poffefles not in himfelf: A Regard io Fame, to Glory, to Pofterity, is quite beyond the narrow Limit of his Reach, and he cannot even attempt at the Failings of a great Mind, which in him m-ght pafa for fo many Virtues. ' But the benevolent Prince of a free Natien is the near-eft Refemblance of the Deity himfelf; he cannot be the Goo, but he would be~ the Father; he cannot be the Creator, but he is the Preserver of his People: He difdains the Obedience of bur Bodies, for that is fervile and perifhable; but he greatly aims at the Subjectiortef our Immortal Part; he lays-hold of our Will by his Beneficence, and of our Heartsby his Virtues: He builds not his Dominion upon Fear, which is a diftracted and Aiding Foundation j but he defires and deferves to be loved, for in Love alone is Unity and Power. The Service of fuch a Prince is perfect Liberty ; and he leaves Freedom to his People, that he himfelf may govern like aGoD.
