Daily Courant (Newspaper) - March 18, 1730, London, Middlesex he Daily Coufant. M1 Wednefday^ March i8j 1719-30. To *e Author of the DAILY COURANT Inding there is fecretly given to Pcrfons of Diftinction, a Pamphlet (which was printed in the Year 1720, for to ferve a Purpole which is now vifible) entitled, Some Covfiderations on the Nature and Importance of the aft-Jndia Trade, it is judged rieceffary to inform fuch Gentlemen into uhofe Hands this Piece may accidentally fall, that as the ncceflary Prohibitions have been made by Parliament of all fuch Manufactures made in India, interfering with the Manufactures of G)eat Britain, the Queftion now in Debate, is not, Whether the Trade to J-dia is beneficial to this Kingdom, or whether it (hall be carried on at all, but whether it would not be much more profitably carried on for the Nation, were it not conhVd tobeex-ercis'd tnly by the Company with a Joint Stock. This is the prefent and only Subject of Enquiry, and indeed it is a Point highly incumbent upon thofe whofe Duty more immediately it is to take Care of the Publick, * thoroughly to examine, before the Company have any further Prolongation of their Term ; becaufe if it Jioould happen that other Nations fhould engage in this Trade, me may be in Danger of focn being fcat almoji intirely out of it; as may be concluded from the following Pajfagcs out of the Piece above mention'd. " Was this Trade (the Eaff-India Trade) loft wholly, or in Part, to the Kingdom, " nothing can anAver and fupply the Dc-fi-" ciency (of the Cuftoms and Excife) but " Land, which in fuch cafes muft bear the " whole Load. " I am unwilling to make any fuch un-" grateful Supposition, bur what may be the " Confequences, // the opc}iderst after the " Expiration of the Seven Years, Jhall again " frefume to Trade to the Eaff-Indies, is not in " the Power of any Penetration to forefee ; 'tis '* certain, if it be nor prevented, as I'm per-** fwaded it will, both Land and Trade muft " Xuffer, this all know, but I hope none will "feel. u The Company had long the good For-** tune to fee their Trade flourifh, and they ^ bad flaiter'd themfelves with the Thoughts' of making their Commerce more beneficial *' to the Publick. But of a fudcJen the Of " tenders broke in upon 'em, and arbitrarily invaded their juft Rights and Properties j *' the Company have fuffer'd greatly, more per. *' haps than moft Men generally imagine. Be-" fore the Offenders broke in upon their " Trade, they ufed to employ a great many * more Ships. " But did this Infult and Wrong of the " Offenders tend to the particular Lofs of the " Company, and not ftrike intirely at the " publick Safety, the Company would *' then endeavour to reconcile themfelves *' to their hard Fortune, and wait for hap* " pier Times ; but as the Cafe ftands now, ,r the Offenders let up for a Competition " and Rivalfhip with us in Trades and Nival Forces ; and by the Happinefs of " their Situation, and fmall Duties, they will " dcflroy not only the Eaff-India Trade, but " by fetting up Manufactories of all fores in **' their own Country, they will break in up-'* on the other Branches of our Trade, which <* at prefent feem moft fecure and out of " Danger, " The Vindication then of our juft Rigbrs, in the Abolition of this Trade, is of the utmoft Confequence to our Landed as well as Trading Intereft ; this Vfurpation of the Oftenders is a Canker that will eat into both, and if not fully and timely removed, will affect the whole Mafs of our Commerce, and be atlaft too powerful to be maftcr'd. Indeed we have this Corfi-fort and Security, that his prefent Ma-jefty and his Minifters are as fenfible of the . Importance of the Eaji India Trade, as they are careful of its Intereft ; fo that we need have little Apprehenfion of the Continuance of the Offend Company. But were it poffible for 'em to get a formal and aliowedEJlablifk* mem (which I am perfuaded they never will) it would certainly produce very fatal Effects, and in a little Time we fhould vainly and effectually lament our Decay and Poverty, the neceflary Confequence of our miftaken Policy ; and then fully, but too late, be convinced that our Eaft-IndiaTr difeild, from Oporto.
