Daily Courant (Newspaper) - January 29, 1730, London, Middlesex The Daily Courant. No. 88 . WE are more and more convinced of the Czar's Refolutipn to make his conftant Residence at Mof-cow ; feveral fine Houfes being built near the Palace of Cremelin there, for the Ufe of the Colleges ot the Chancery of the rel'pe&ive Provinces of Ruflia. The Princefs Dolgorucki's Houfhold is now formed, and confifts of Fifty Perfons, for whofe Maintenance the Czar has fet apart the Sum of 50,000 Rubles a Year. We hear his Czarian Majefty will not confummate his Marriage till next Summer. The Governors of Siberia, Cazan, and Aftracan are ordered to fet at Liberty feveral Perfons who had been banifhed into thofe diftant Provinces; and the Czar has appointed CommifSoners to vifit the Prifons, and give him an Account wb^at Fadts are charged upon the Prifoners, that he may pardon the lefs criminal. The Chams of the Tartars that have lately pm themfelves under the Protection of ihe Czar, have fent their Tributes to Derbent, confifting of Horfes, Sheep, Furs and other Merchandizes. The Ambafladors of Sultan Efriff are arrived in Mufcovy; but the Roads are fo bad, that they can make but fhort Days Journies, and will hardly reach Mofcow this Month or fix .Weeks. Lisbon, Dec. 29. N. S. Laft Week the King nominated to all the vacant Profeffors Chairs in the Univerfity of Coimbra. The Countefs de Ribeira Grande was lately brought to Bed of her firft Son, and the Marchionefs de Tavora of her fourth Daughter. Dr. Antonio dos Santos d'Oliviera, Gentleman of the King's Houfhold, Counfellor of State, Knight of the Order of Chrift, De-fembargador of the Palace, and Confervador of cbe French Nation in this Kingdom, died hereSohe Day iaft|Week, aged Ninety Years. The King has lately given the Collegiate Abbey of St. Mary the Royal at Arbas del Puerto, in the Kingdom of Leon, to Don Jufto Mora Lamao, Profeflbr of Divinity in che Univerfity of Salamanca. His Majefty has conferred the Office of 'ntrodu&or of Ambafladors, vacant by the Death of the Count de Villafranca, to his Son Don Joachim de Sobremonte, now Count de Villafranca. Don Simon de Al-parten, Captain of Grenadiers in the Regiment of Foot of Guadalaxara, is made a Lieutenant-Colonel. Verfailles, Feb. z. N. S. On the ift Inftant, the King heard Mafs in the Chappel of the Caftle, and received the Sacrament, which was adminiftered by the Bifhop Count de Chalons, his Firft Almoner. The 20, being the Feaft of the Purification of the Blefled Virgin, the King, accompany"d by the Duke of Orleans, the Duke of Bourbon, the Count of Cbarolois, the Count of Clermont, the Duke du Maine, the Prince de Doaibes, the Count d'Eu, the Count de Touloufe, and the Knights, Commanders, and Officers of the Order of the Holy Ghoft, who met in his Cabinet, went to the Chap-pel in the Caftle. The King, before whom the 2 Serjeants of the Chamber carry*d their Maces, affifted at the Blefling of the Tapers, at the Proceflion that was made in the Caftle-Yard, and at High Mafs celebrated by the Abbot Tefnieres, Chaplain in Ordinary to the Chappel of Mufick, and fung to Mufick. The Queen, accompany'd by the Ladies of her Court, heard High Mafs in her Gallery. The fame Afternoon, their Majefties, accompany'd by the Duke of Orleans, heard a Sermon prf-acb'd by the Bifhop of Cifteron, atv.i afrer it Vefpers fung to Mufick. On the 1 ft Inftant, M. Bennet, Redor of the Univerfity, accompany'd by the Deans of the Faculties, and the Procurators of the Nations, had the Honour to preient a Taper to the King, the Queen, and*he Dauphin, according to ancient Cuftom. On the 31ft paft, Count MafFei, AmbafTa-dor Extraordinary of the King or Sardinia, had a Private Audience of his Majefty, being conducted by the Counc de Monconfeil, In-trodu&or of Ambafladors. The King has nominated M. de Vaftan, Intendant of the Generality of Champaigne ; and he is to be [fucceeded in the Intendancy of the Generality of Caen, by M. le Peletier de Beaupre, Matter of Requefts. Paris, Jan. 4. N. S. Ob the z8th paft at Night, the Prince de Rohan gave a great Ball at the Hotel de Soubize. There was another the next Night at the Hotel de Conde ; and the Dutchefs du Maine defigns to give a third. On the 29th, the Duke of Orleans went as far as Claye, to meet the Duke of Lorrain ; and about Eight o'Clock at Night thofe two Princes came in a Coach together to the Palais-Royal. The Duke of Orleans gave his Apartment there to the Duke of Lorrain, who is incognito, by the Name of Count de Bla-mont: and his Royal Highnefs of Orleans makes ufe of that fome time fince fitted up by his Order in the Great Gallery. The Duke of Lorrain's Table is ferv'd up with fix Courfes of 15 Covers each, and 27 Difhes to a Courfe, at the Expence of the Duke of Orleans. They write from Lyons, that the Arch-bifliop of that City, after fcverat Apople&ick Fits, had been feized with a Palfy in his Head, which entirely deprived him of the Ufe of his Speech. M. de 1' Epine, a Bookfeller of this City, has printed a Relation of the Feafts made at Rome in November laft, by the Cardinal de Polignac, upon Occafion of the Dauphin's Birth ; together with the Italian Cantata fung in bis Eminency s Palace upon that Account. M.?le Pelletier, formerly Firft Prefident of the Parliament of Paris, died upon the 30th of January. Alfo the fame Day died fuddenly Mi Chevalier, Canon of Notre Dame, and- Syndick of the Clergy. In the Night between the 30th and 31ft, the Marchionefs de Grave was brought to Bed of a Daughter. Ye fterday the King and Queen went to Marli, where the Court will refide till the f t t do it at the next Meeting, and adhere to the Decrees of the Faculty, as five Doctors have already done. The Manner of the Dnke of Lorrain's do-' ing Fealty and Homage to the King for the Dutchy of Bar, and other alienable Dominions of the Crown, purfuanr to the Treaty of Ryfwick, was the fame as the Duke of Lorrain his Father did on the 25th of November, 1699. The King was in his Bed-chamber, fitting in an Eafy Chair, and covered. When the Duke of Lorrain entered the Room, he made three Reverences as he approached his Majefty, who neither rofe up, nor uncover'd bimfelf. The Duke of Lorrain having fur-rendered his Sword, his Hat, and his Gloves to the firft Gentleman of the Bed-Chamber, be kneeled upon a Cufhion placed at the King's Feet, and his Majefty held his joined Hands between his own, whilft the Chancel* lor of France read the Oath with a loud Voice; M. Chauvelin, Keeper of the Seals of France, Minifter and Secretary of State,' and the Count de Maurepa?, Secretary of State, being prefent; and the Duke promis'd to obferve it. Then the King rofe from his Seat, and uncovered himfelf; but prefently covered bimfelf again, and ordered the Duke' of Lorrain to be covered. The Duke of Orleans, the Duke of Bourbon, the Counc of Cbarolois, the Count of Clermoot, the Prince of Conti, the Prince de Dombes, the Count d'Eu, and the Count de Touloufe, who were with the King, likewife covered themfelves. A Moment after, the Duke of Lorrain being retired, his Majefty returned into his Cabinet. Falmouth, Jan. 24. On the 22d arrived the Townfhend Packet in five Days from Corunna, Capr. Cooper. Dartmouth, Jan. 24. Yefterday failed the Sufanna of Dover, John Andrews, for London ; the Day before the Two Sarahs o� of this Place, Andrew Lydefton, for London. This Day failed the Happy Return of this Place, Roger Matthews, from Leghorn for Amfterdam; The 25 th, now in the Road the Jofepb of this Place, William Newcomb, from Oporto, waits for Orders. In Port the Lamb of this Place, George Row, from Alicant, waits for Orders; the Recovery of Boftori for Gibraltar with Coals. Plimoutb, Jan. 25. Yefterday failed the Ann Galley of London. No Ships came in fince my laft. Deal, Jan. 27. Remain the Rye Galley and the Blandford Men of War; the Martha, Hancock, Heningham Caftle, Jones, both fnr Antigua ; the Gibraltar, Mitchel, foe has given them till the lit of March next, the Time formerly granted them expiring upon 13th Inftant.
