Friday, January ifj, 17x9-30. to the Author of the DAILY COURANT. s 11\, THOUGHT have read in yours, * and other Papers, the many tin. anfwerable Reafons that have been aligned againft the Trading of the South-Sea Company, as Afftcntiftsr not only becaufe their Trading is highly prejudicial to the General Commerce and Intereft of the Nation, but becaufe the Proprietors of the Stock have been very great Lofers thereby j yet I do not remember to have reau any thing, in any one faper, relating to the Power exercifed by the South-Sea Company, of Trading to any other Part of the VpoAd, not within the Limits of their Charter ; and therefore I ftull fay fometbing on this Head; which I am indu ced to do at this time, by reading an Adverrife-ment of the South-Sea Company, printed in almoft all the Publick Papers, giving Notice, That they intend, for the future, to pur-thajci in Jamaica, what Negroes they jhatt want for the Supply of tbeAfftento^ however with this Reftnction and'Limitation, that they fhaU continue in this Method, if it he not attended with any unforefien Inconvenience ; becaufe this is an open Declaration of the Company's, That they have a Flight to trade to Africa, fince thereby they intimate, that if the Method of buying Negrots at Jamaica be attended .^ith dny Inconvenience, they will proceed to Trade tv Africa again. But in order to (hew, that this Company Jiave not any Right to trade to- Africa, or any other Part of the World, unlefs within the Limits prefcribed by their Charter, notwithstanding they may hitherto have done it without any Opposition on the Pare of the Private Merchants of Great Britain; who, however, it is to be[remembred have all along queftioned the Legality of the Company's Trading to the Coaft of Africa, though they may not have judged it proper to enter into the Trouble and Expence of trying this Point inPPeftminftcr~Hall,l fhall obferve, 1 ft, That by an Act of the 9th of her late Majefty Queen Anne, entitled, An A�l for making good Deficiencies, and Satisfying tht Pub lick Debts, and for creSing d Corporation to carry on a Trade to the South-Sea, and for the Encouragement of the Fi/hery, and for Liberty to Trade in unmought Lon with the SubjeBi of Spain, and to Repeal the ABs fir regiftring Seamen, it is among other Things enacted, That the Corporation to be erected in Purfuance of this Act, and their Suc-ce-flbrs, (hall have, and be entitled uritOj and .vetted from the ift Day of Au-guft it 11, for ever in the fole Trade, and Traffick into unto and from all the Kingdoms, Lands, Countries, Territories, Iflands, Cities, Towns, Portsr Havens, Creeks and Places of America on the Eaft fide thereof,' from the River Aranoca to the Soutber,moft * Part of the Terra Del Fuego, and on the Weft fide thereof from the faid Souther-moft Part of the faid Terra Del Fuego thro' the South Seas the Northermoft Part of America, and into unto and from all Countries, Iflands and Places within the faid Limit's, which are reputed to belong to the Crown of Spain, or which (hall hereafter be found out or difcovered within the faid Limits, not exceeding Three Hundred Leagues * The Letters in this Paper, here referred to,
