Black And White (Newspaper) - February 1, 1902, London, Middlesex February i, 1902 179 A Great Book.-Mr. Benjamin Kidd's new and very interesting work-Principles of Western Civilts^tidn-though formally complete in itself is described as the first volume of a system of evolutionary philosophy. The main thesis of the book embodies a fundamental conception, namely, the shifting of the centre of significance in the modern evolutionary hypothesis out of the present into the future. The future is always of more importance than the present. The majority, in whose interests natural selection is of necessity continuously discriminating, is always in the future. It is not, as the early Darwinians conceived, the qualities and causes contributing to a mere free fight in the present, but those by which the interests in the present have been most efficiently subordinated to those in the future, that have controlled the larger and deeper meaning of the evolutionary process throughout life. This is the conception which is applied with remarkable results to the historical process in Western Civilisation. The principles which are involved are carried down through Western history into the modern world-process, and into the midst of the current phenomena of the economic situation and of national and international politics with striking effect. Another Classic.-The latest addition to that wonderful series, "The World's* Classics," by which Mr. Grant Richards'is gaining deserved kudos, whatever may be the pecuniary return, is Darwin's Origin of Species. This is a charming pocket volume of 441 pages and a perfect index for is. It makes one wish that he were only now commencing to buy his books. It is to be sincerely hoped that this series of books will bring the publisher a good reward, for he is deserving of every impecunious book-lover's gratitude. Living Rulers of Mankind, which is being issued in monthly parts by Mr. George Allen, is apparently enjoying a great sale. Tt is an admirably compiled and illustrated publication, and when bound and well indexed should have considerable and lasting value as a reference work. It is well edited, finely printed on excellent paper, and the illustrations are admirable. The Official Guide to the London and South-Western Railway is published, at a shilling, by Messrs. Cassell and Co. The work has been very thoroughly and intelligently done, and with its many maps, excellent index, and well-written letterpress, is a model. TEACHER'S FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHS.
