News-Democrat, The (Newspaper) - March 25, 1902, Uhrichsville, Ohio I e t I Y HI 25 24 A SEAT IN THE U S SENATE It What It Horace To Go on the Bond for the Release of Jefferson Davis The negotiations now going on for the sale of Beauvoir the Davis homestead to the state of Miss as a home for ex- confederate veterans recalls incidents in the varied career of Horace Greely Mrs Davis who is now a party to the negotiation for the sale of the property to which Davis repaired after his release in consultation with his at New York They advised her that in the excited state of feeling the only hope of securing her husband's release was to get a leading republican on the bond and in his opinion Horace Greeh was the only republican who could be with any chance of success Mrs Davis went and saw Mr Greely She stated to him that her husband was dying from his close confinement in prison that she had been told that the hope of getting him released on bond was to get the signature of Horace Greely Her suffering and her earnest- ness won her plea and Horace signed the bond and sacrifice thereby his the Republican party a prestige he long had held and never thereafter He was a candidate at the time for a seat in the United senate from New York and his election appeared sured All his life he had coveted tical recognition and had broken more than once with part associates because of their to recognize his claims to party preferment Now it appeared tbat he at last was to receive recognition to which his long services in of the party clearly entitled him All this was changed by one stroke of tho pen The nest day he was the most unpopular republican in the state of New York His candidacy was re- by the legislature of his state and his name anathematized out the entire north Horace Greely had yielded to the of a erous nature and did a noble act but the party for which he had probably did more than any other man of his day never forgave him Davis had been indicted for several dates were set for hip trial but he was never tried That he was guilty of treason would hardly admit of doubt but if he was guilty so likewise were almost the entire population of the Southern States And they had but put in operation the principles en- by the Hartford Convention in order to force a termination of the war of 1812 and had that war lasted much longer there is little doubt but New England would have attempted secession Greely better appreciated the situation than any other man of his day except Lincoln and like him he was most anxious for a policy of conciliation His action did much to soften the bitterness of would have done more had it not met with such bitter denunciation by the partizan press of the north was a gift to Mrs Davis some
