celebrate the 25th Anniversary of their Moller Pipe Organ with a Organ Recital by Richard Merryman The Anniversary Organ Recital also will allow Tyrone Lutherans to reflect on their fine heritage of organists that stretches back almost to World War I beginning with Pearl Cowher continu ing with John Rodland to the present with Ruth Bedford Miss Bedfords devotion to the Lutheran Pipe Organ seems evident from the fact that in 30 years as church organist she has only been absent four Sundays from the con sole of the instrument Custom designed built and voiced for the Lutheran Sanctuary by the Moll er Company in 1966 the Lutheran Organ contains over 800 pipes divided into fourteen rows or ranks John Rod land organist of the Tyrone Lutheran Church from 19581961 while at Junia ta College masterminded the organs design to fulfill a threefold purpose to lead congregational hymns to accom pany solos and choir anthems and to perform organ literature from a wide variety of countries and centuries Along with the Catholic Episcopal and Good Shepherd Methodist instruments the Lutheran Organ is the newest of four remaining pipe organs that survive in Tyrone For the Moller Company of Hagerstown Maryland to replace the Lutheran organ it would cost at least Thats the average price of two homes in Tyrone To demonstrate their appreciation of the musical and spiritual worth of their pipe organ and to encourage musical cooperation among Tyrones Churches the Lutheran Church Council invited neighboring Presbyterian Organist Richard Merryman to present a fifteen minute Celebration Concert at am before the service on Sunday August 18 Realizing the historical and musical significance of the Lutheran Organ Merryman will present a program fea turing organ music from four countries and several centuries that will allow lis teners to hear the tonal resources of an instrument which incorporates the fin est traditions of German French Brit ish and American Pipe Organ Architecture The music of the morning will begin with Bachs Prelude and Fugue in B Flal Major In the early 1700s the German Lutheran composer IS Bach supposedly created this work along with seven other Little Preludes and Fugues as organ training pieces for his seventeen musically talented children From Germany the organ music will carry listeners to France where Leon mystical Priere de Notre Dame will sound its soaring melody Not surprisingly this piece originated in Roman Catholic France where much of the organ music served as back ground for the reenactment of the Mass while the suns rays shimmered through stained glass Cont on Page 2 PHOTO BY STEVE MICHAELS Merryman sits at the organ while David Bickle observes as the two prepare for the Sunday conceit they will present at Tyrones
