SATURDAY JANUARY 4 1930 AUTO FATALITIES SHOW INCREASE New York City Shows Increase of 232 During 1929 By The United Press Death unbidden companion of America on the move claimed ap proximately five and onehalf cr cent more victims in automobile traffic accidents during 1929 than in the preceding year a survey of 32 representative cities disclosed today In only eight of the cities were fewer from acci dents recorded Increases in the other 24 ranged from about two per cent at Detroit to almost 70 per cent at Berkeley Calif Total auto accident death toll ior the 32 cities including such major centers as New York Chicago De troit Cleveland and St Louis was 5092 for 1929 and 4825 for 1928 The increase is 553 per cent New York the largest city in the nation led in the number killed with 1262 during the year just con cluded as compared with 1030 in 1928 Other larger cities showed de creases Chicagos auto fatalities dropped from 918 to 799 Cleve land noted a decrease from 332 to 275 and deaths from this cause at St Louis were 161 last year us compared with 215 in 1928 Other cities where decreasing death toll were recorded included Milwaukee San Fracisco ma City Des Moines and Raleigh N C The favorable records of many of the larger cities in the country cut down the percentage of increase over 1928 perceptibly The 192 deaths were more numerous than those in 1928 in cities of the next rank in population by from 15 to 50 per cent Washington D C national cap ital recorded an increase of two deaths over the 80 occurring from automobile and traffic mishaps in 1923 THE TYRONE DAILY
