Turtle Creek People (Newspaper) - March 3, 2006, Dallas, Texas WHOS UPTOWN Wings over Turtle COMMUNITY Martinis and manicures I FRIDAY MARCH 3 Wright rollback sparks new service from airport By Peter Simek Staff Writer Jet engines took to the morning sky 15 minutes ear lier than usual March 2 as American Airlines launched its new service from Love Field to take on rival airline Southwest which won a rollback in congressional restrictions on the airport late last year American will fly to St Louis Kansas City San Antonio and Austin a total of 16 daily departures bringing the total number of daily flights at Love up to 146 The new service is the lat est act in an ongoing battle over the repeal of the Wright Amendment the federal law that limits flights from Love Field to Texas and nearby states In 2005 Congress amended Wright to allow flights from Love to desti nations in Missouri in response to a campaign by Southwest to dp away with the restrictions altogether Southwest has argued that the Wright Amend ment places unfair tions on competition that ultimately results in higher fares and costs for Dallas consumers American says airline not airport competition should be encouraged and has asked Southwest to move operations to Dal Worth Interna tional Airport where there are no destination tions Residents who live near the airport have expressed apprehension at the pro posed repeal of the Wright Amendment citing traffic safety and pollution prob lems that could result from the increased number of flights at Love The Dallas City Council entered the fray Feb 22 when it raised landing fees at Love Field from 35 cents to 55 cents The city owned airport has been operating under a deficit despite the fact that it hosts the nations most successful airline South west and enjoyed some of the lowest in the nation During the Feb 22 coun cil meeting some repre tried to press the council to raise the fees even higher but that motion was Elections Set For Tuesday Voters to choose Governor District Attorney party hopefuls By Peter Simek Staff Writer Its an odd platform a candi date for governor urging voters to stay home on election day But thats exactly what coun try star turned gubernatorial hopeful Kinky Friedman is advocating For the independent Fried man it makes sense because a vote in Tuesdays primary elec tion makes voters ineligible to sign independent candidates petitions Carole Keeton Strayhorn each need 45000 signatures to make it onto Novembers Despite his plea Friedman wont have to worry about keeping people away from the polls according to Southern Methodist University political science professor Calvin Jill son Jillson said turnout in mid term primary elections is usu ally around 10 percent of regis tered voters meaning there will be plenty of people left to sign independent petitions But low voter turnout can have a significant effect on the way some important local races swing Three Republican and three Democratic candidates are run ning for Dallas County District Attorney Jillson said in each race two candidates have a real chance Toby Shook has been tapped by his boss current District Attorney Hill which is a boost Jillson said But not nec in the eyes of all voters It is a mixed blessing but probably on net beneficial Jill son said Jillson said many voters are still ambivalent about Hill because of the fake drug scan dal in which the District Attor ney accepted drug charges that left nearly two dozen people jailed The key is if you think Hill has done a good job you go for Shook Jillson said If you have questions then you look at Cunningham who is See ELECTION Pate Restaurants Vie For Wares Argentinean Bottled Poetry dream child uncorked in March STAR KNH period to Argentina I just fcl in love with the wine country in Argentina Elliott said As a former business investor Elliott saw the potential the country had to offer the wine industry and quickly bought three vineyards and built a win ery Because of the restrictions and high costs of wine distribution in the United States the exporta tion by Argentinean farmers is scarce and often unexplored
