when resi dents from all over Dallas packed the Jewish Community Center in Preston Hollow to voice their support for a new way of combating the teardown trend no one would have believed that the entire effort could have fallen apart because of something called a load bearing wall But as council members argued into the night on Nov 9 on a final proposal hammered out at the last minute by communities speaker Residents Helpless Against Homeless Police initiative to crack down on nuisance crimes By Paige Phelps Society Reporter Customers find that some times they get more than their morning coffee at the Oak Lawn Avenue Starbucks loca tion That business along with several of its neighbors in the Turtle Creek and Oak Lawn areas must deal with dling and solicitation from homeless people living in the area Officers at the Dallas Police Department said they not only know about it but have introduced an initiative to deal with the nuisance issues in the past three weeks resulting in arrests thus far This initiative is not just for Oak Lawn Sgt Breidenich of the Central Interactive Community Policing ICP unit said This was directed by Chief Garcia its a citywide ini We know the mayor is concerned aboutit dling and every community group everyone weve talked to has concerns regarding solicitation Janet Watts a chair of the Turtle Creek Association in charge of its biannual creek cleanup said the homeless cre ate a problem in the area not only because of die dling but also because they generate trash and deter others from enjoying parks and open spaces During her cleanups Watts and her volunteers regularly find evidence of the homeless down by the creek from the occasional sleeping bag to full on encampments with tarps thrown over trees for shelter They also find empty syringes and drug paraphernalia as well When they do they 44 Businesses have to tell us if they dont want homeless on their property 93 Sgt Breidenich Dallas Police contact the ICP unit which sweeps the area and clears it of the homeless But diey ICP have limited resources and they cant really completely eradicate the prob lem without a continual effort Watts said Wendy Cone manager was a night for helping children as the 22nd annual An Affair of the Heart gala began Nov 11 at the Fairmont Hotel The event benefited the Notre Dame School which currently teaches 122 students ages 621 The evening began with the school choir singing Its a Small World and Thats Amore which was the theme of the evening That was followed by a video presentation that highlighted life at the school including students going to class in Special Olympics going to prom and celebrat ing their graduation As an added touch every dinner table had a gift for prayer boxes that were handmade by the Notre Dame students All of which gave attendees a glimpse of how the proceeds would be used Theresa Francis principal of the Notre Dame School wrote a letter to the guests in the program Students at Notre Dame MAKING MUSIC The Notre Dame School Choir performed at the Fairmont Hotel last week PHOTO have a diagnosis of mild to moderate mental retardation she wrote Offering individu instruction as well as music speech therapy inde pendent living skills and vocational training Notre Dame School is guided by a firm belief in the dignity of each person as a child of God Angela Brodrick and Laura Quinn were the event co chairs Ms Brodrick said she thought the event was very successful I think this event was real ly really super Ms Brodrick said Its so important for the fundraising to keep the school going Ms Brodrick also said that all the work to set up the silent auction items was done by parents and were many silent auction items to bid on but the main event of the evening was the live auction after dinner Among the items for auction were vacation packages restaurant gift cer jewelry and concert tickets Many guests also chose to contribute tuition for one or more Notre Dame School students which is a year The two most items on the auction block though were a puppy and a childs playhouse The puppy a hypo allergenic cross between a Maltese and a Poodle and val ued at became the subject of
