tumultuous cheers In the course of a long speech he Raid The campaign in which we are now en gaged is a most important one The de- of the nation is looking to New York to see what we will do They are look with k eat anxiety and for tho outcome of our campaign Our platform placed the party precisely where it stood one year ago We have taken no step back ward W e have given an assurance of con and good faith in our attitude be- fore the American people One year ago the Democratic party made a deliberate pledge committing itself to tariff m We re- iterate that pledge and propose to fight it out on that line no matter how many years it mny to wm Our distinctly says that we have never and do not now advocate free trade The statement is an accurate one We believe that sufficient revenue should be raised to meet the expenses of the government economically administer ed and that the raising of greater is and unwarranted A Democratic victory now will cheer the true friends of reform in every state m the Union It will encourage every stalwart Democrat and clear the way for a national in 1892 Compliments Cleveland's Administration We believe that the surplus should be reduced W e e m a sti let construe tion of tho constitution We believe m the sovereignty of the states We believe in the honest nnd economical administration of public affairs The present administrate n the longer it is in power the more clearly shows how wise capable and just was the administration of Grover Cleveland Proo ident Cleveland amply fulfilled the pledges of his party He conducted the affairs of state with ability and for the public good Ibe Political Situation Tn my conversation with our southern friends I found them confident and hopeful In Virginia I met the Democratic candidates for governor and lieutenant governor They are making an earnest and energetic and a hopeful contest and to them and to the nation it is an important contest It in volves everything connected with their litiral life and the best wishes of the racy of New York is I am sure with them in their struggle Our people m other states are active and alert They are not cast but are organising for victory In our owu state the people fully realize the im- portance of the issues before them and are preparing for that victory which I feel surely awaits Ex-President Cleveland's Letter The follow ing letter of regret was received from ex President Cleveland NEW YORK Oct 21 1889 8 Weeks Esq SIR I am m receipt of your in vita tion to attend the convention of New York state Democratic clubs to be held at the Hoffman house on the mst I am glad that you were considerate enough of my and feelings to give me in to infer from your note that my failure to accept your invitation would neither cause great disappointment nor be construed as indicating any lack of interest In the work which the clubs represented in the league have undertaken Those organizations had their origin in the heat and activity of a presidential election which plenty of that upon which political easily sub- Bint While they are certainly useful at such a time it must be conceded that the noise and excitement of a campaign are not conducive to the accomplishment of ary work or to the effective of political ti uth Thin most important work can better be done in more quiet surround ings though usually it is not then so easy to maintain political It hnn been too often the case if it may not be raid to be the rule that political clubs whatever their declarations of perpetuity mnj have been have oily lived during the in which
