Batchelor vs Samuel W Kirkbride which was recently tried in that court and a dict found in favor of Kirkbride The was fully described iu THE TIMES at the time of trial The reserved his decision A Sacrilegious Act An unscrupulous merchant thought to utilize the crowds that gathered abont the State and Greene streets during the passage of the funeral procession afternoon by advertising his wares Bundles of circulars were thrown into the air just as the hearse containing the remains passed by The penurious spirit displayed was severely denounced by the spectators who considered the act a sacrilegious one Sprinter Abbott Wing The of foot race between Patrick Abbott and John two for its absence True the City Democratic Executive Committee met at their quarters and distributed tickets and boodle and their of the opposite party gathered around a centie table in a Second Ward hotel and did the same thing That was all The streets were not filled with drunkan heelers ing the name and virtues of their favorite candidate as is generally the ease This is accounted for from the fact that for the first time in the recollection of ye oldest inhabitant the ticket to be voted to-day contains the name of but one candidate This condition of affairs will not happen again before another decade has rolled around At the Democratic headquarters thing was serene and everybody jubilant Visions of an unlimited supply of lucre for to-day caused an aged disciple of son to declare to a TIMES representative that the Democrats will elect all three of their representatives In the Second sembly District they claimed that the long-standing family feud had not yet been settled The friends of John said one hold a secret meeting to-night to decide whether they will support Taylor or not The Democratic candidate in the Second District George W Evans is con- of his election His friends believe he can the usual 200 Republican majority in the Second Ward down to 50 The Seventh Ward will give from 200 to 225 Democratic majority while the Fifth is good for 40 more Allowing 175 lican majority in the First Ward they figure at the lowest estimate a majority oi 15 for Counsellor Evans On the other hand the Republicans predict that will exceed that of Chambers last Fall The Third District Republicans were even more jubilant and confident than their antagonists in the Second District election to many was a fore- gone conclusion He had gone into the tight to win and unless all signs failed Smith's name would be changed to Dennis before midnight to-night To gain this end they figure that the average Democratic majority of 110 iu the Sixth Ward would contract to about 40 and lowed Smith 200 majority in the Fourth The Third Ward usually Democratic would give a small majority for Ossenberg whose popularity with the Germans iu Chambersburg would swell the Republican majority iii that borough to 250 or more At these figures Ossenberg would win by an even 10 votes The Democrats ever figure by a different multiplication table and were sanguine that Smith would beat Ossenberg so overwhelmingly that his party would lay him on the shelf for the balance of his political life The Prohibitionists while they scarcely expect to elect their candidates are making an aggressive fight Last Fall the Second District Prohibitionists only 44 votes while the lower district nearly doubled this number ing 82 ballots They hope to roll up double the number of temperance votes over last year Their candidate in the Second District is Gilbert S Davison George 0 Seward is the nominee in the Third District and expects to receive at lewrt 300 votes The contest in the First Assembly Dis- will be a race between J W Wright the Democratic candidate and S B with the chances naturally in favor of the latter The Re- publican nominee is very popular with the grangers in the district who predominate Mayor Wright of Princeton has given universal satisfaction to his constituents of that classical borough and it is given on good authority that the students of the college will rally to his support In the Second District lost year ber's majority over Lalor was 293 In the Third District Hammell was defeated by 321 votes To-day the simmering of the political pot WARNER'S SILVEH His Views on the Silver Tho lution of tho Question CHICAGO Nov 2 After tho regular monthly banquet of tho
