advocacy of the adoption by the of a system of postal telegraphy and the use of an instrument in which he is interested Delaney argued that the development of the postal telegraph could only be conducted successfully by the u- ment and replied to a number of arguments which hare been made against governmental ownership One argument advanced by telegraph com- panies he said was that electricity was a matter for private control and that government ownership would repress invention Delaney contended that telegraph proprietors have not given proper encouragement to tors and that orderly Conduct James Hayles and Is Held tor Keeping Disorderly House Lottie of No 131 street went to Central Police Court this morning as a complainant against John Hayles for disorderly conduet and assault and battery and after a speedy turning of the tables left the place under bail to answer to the present arand jury the charge of keeping a disorderly house Three witnesses are to testify against her James Hayles and John White two Trenton potters of Long Branch an inmate of manner in which it was all brought about simple but yet very neatly performed At half past Severn this morning Patrolman Kelly heard a commotion at the street house and went to the place as it is believed by the police to have a bad character and for some time they been endeavoring to some dence against it When Kelly reached the spot he found that the two women and two men were in a noisy wrangle but the woman fearing the house was to be raided made a com- plaint as stated against Hayles and cured his arrest The whole four came to Police quarters but had been there only a stoit time when Lottie with the tears rolling down her cheeks went to Judge Coutier and beseeched him to allow the of the charge against The two had had a talk in the meantime and Lottie apparently feared to lose the friendship of the potter After some dis- cussion the withdrawal of the disorderly charge was allowed but no sooner had this been done than Captain Cleary entered a charge against the woman for keeping a disorderly house The prise of the Vandergrift woman was something sublime and if feigned was the perfection of the histrionic art She wept and wailed and declared her innocence in no uncertain tones She said the only reason for her arrest was that Captain Cleary was provoked because she did not press the disorderly charge against Hayles Lottie was held in default of a line for disorderly conduct as were also John White and Hayles They will be used as witnesses The alleged disorderly house tress tried to get Judge Coulier to accept a cast payment tine for girl but the judge refused as is from Long Brunch anu if released almost certainly would fail to be around when wanted as a witness was released on bail provided by Milkman Ralph J Captain Cleary that the place was well known as a dhe of more than the usual bad reputation but that in this as in all other cases of a like nature it was hard to get anj evidence against the place The department had been watching it for a long time and the present appeared an excellent opportunity to prosecute Young girls from seashore towns were the occupants of the Vandergrift house The proprietress herself originally came from Long Branch or one of the resorts near there The Long Branch girl will be the principal witness for the and she will be held until Monday next at least The matter will be placed before the present Grand Jury Playing cards by the pack or dozen packs at about half cost at No 146 East State street tf Articles of
