Legislature to Make a Separate Court of tiie Court of Errors The lawyers of the State are up in arm's against the proposed amendment to the Constitution to be acted on at this session providing for the revision of the system of higher State Courts The present Court of Errors and Appeals consists of the Chancellor the Justices of the Supreme Court who have not sat in a case when in a court below and the Lay Judges The amendment before the Legislature which was quietly and passed in the closing days of the provides principally for the elimination of the Lay Judges from the in the State where tions of law and not of fact are brought up for review There will be presented to the Legislature during the coming week a petition from a largo number of lawyers asking the Legislature to pass no amendment to the Judiciary system of the State which does not provide for a separate and distinct body to constitute the Court of Errors and Appeals Samuel H Grey of Camden and G D W Vroom of this city have been active in securing signers to the petition and among the names already obtained are H N McCarter of Essex W H burg of Monmouth ex-Judge son Hudson Gilbert Collins Jersey City Samuel Kalisch Essex and Judge U Lanning of this city The desire of the petitioners is in accord with the recommendations made by the Constitutional Commission appointed by Governor Werts and it is a matter of mystery to the commission why the Legislature ignored their report The present action of the bar is likely to lead to an interesting legislative discussion of the subject The work of securing
