writer TRAVERSE CITY Well gentlemen I'm back again With that B J Hayner one time president of the now troubled Air Metro Airlines began Tuesday night to negotiate with the Northwest Regional Airport Commission for office and counter space for a new commuter line he proposes to operate from Traverse City Hayner wants to put Air Michigan into operation August 15 That is the anniversary of Air Metro's inaugural flight although he did not note the coincidence in his presentation to the commission Hayner who says he was unjustly forced out of Air Metro told the com- missioners the new service would probably be a division of one of the cor- held by his backer Ernest Pittsburgh Pa investor Hayner said Stern is worth in the neighborhood of million Although the airport commission appeared favorable to renting space to Hayner they also asked him to produce a financial statement before deciding They also wanted by July 31 two months rent in advance the office space Hayner seeks in order to hold the option open for the August up One other potential renter is looking at some of the same space located on the second floor of the main terminal building Airport Manager John Hancock noted that Hayner was the first to ask Hayner told the commission that he believes a air com- muter service can be successful on the route he proposes to operate B J Hayner one-time president of Air Metro Airlines said Tuesday night he wants to run a hew commuter air vice Air Michigan at Cherry Capital Airport beginning Aug 15 photo June cost of living climbed 5 percent He said Air Michigan would begin with two 99 airliners or one 99 and two smaller twin-engined One of the would be the same one with which he began Air Metro flights nearly one year ago Hayner said start-up costs for Air Michigan would be around He said he would be in a partnership with Stern Among other holdings Hayner said Stern is an owner in two Florida com- muter airlines As far as the airport commission was concerned Tuesday night Air Metro no longer operated in Traverse City Hancock said Air Metro had its space at the airport without notifying the airport management He also said that contract negotiations which had begun this ing with Air Metro are now in limbo because there had been no contact from the airline since the end of May There appeared to be a lack of in- terest on Air Metro's part Hancock said Hancock has also received notice from one of Air Metro's insurers that they have cancelled commuter vice's insurance policy with them Hayner said that because of the rocky history of commuters operating from Traverse City four have come here and either failed or moved out in the past few years it would take some ing to rebuild the commuter image along the route However not only Hayner but several other persons in the airline business have said commuter service along the Upper Peninsula to Detroit route has a good market if properly handled SEE-SAW WORLD It's a see-saw world and Jim has living pushed by spiraling fuel prices climbed 0.5 per cent in June the government reported today Although June's consumer price rise was slightly less than the 0.6 per cent in- crease recorded in May it still represents the second highest one- month increase this year The annual rate increase works out to per cent And despite today's Labor Department report administration by predictions that in- will ease in coming months and average about 5.7 per cent for the year They noted June's rise although high by traditional standards still represents the first decrease in the in- rate since last February when it rose only 0.1 per compared with 0.4 per cent the previous month The Labor Department said a steep per prices for oline heating oil coal electricity and natural gas accounted for almost one- third of the overall increase in the CPI A month earlier energy prices had ad- only 1 per cent This substantial increase in costs was more than enough to offset a general easing in the volatile food price sector In June food prices rose 0.2 per cent considerably less than the 1 per cent in- crease registered in May The Consumer Price Index stood at 170.1 in June up 5.9 per cent over a year ago This means a consumer now pays for the same goods and services he paid for in 1967 The department said inflation rose 6.1 per cent for the spring through as a whole This com- pares with a 2.9 per cent the first three months of this year In another report the department said real spendable income for Americans decreased 0.9 per cent in June This came largely as a result of shorter work schedules and less over- time for the nation's workers last month For the vear as a whole the average American s buying power is down per cent primarily because increased taxes have overshadowed pay
