bright sunshine morning as the Coast Guard Guard raised the flags and the Junior High of Lockport III played The Star Spangled Banner Benzenberg NCF president John Kennie Traverse City John Anderson Chamber of Commerce president and Jack Bensley Grand Traverse County Commission man welcomed visitors to the annual festival honoring the cherry industry photo by John Hawkins The National Cherry Festival six days set aside each year toj honor the leading industry of the cherry capital of the world and to provide fun and ment for the community its vacationists officially began i at 10 today with ties at the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce i With local officials taking j part along with the Coast j Guard the Westview High Band from III and Rev David Darling the annual salute to cherries got underway i Immediately following the ceremonies was the frog ing contest and turtle races and the opening of the Antique Show and Sale and Arts and Crafts Show and Sale at the Civic ter The show an- tiques in all collecting ies and quality arts and crafts will continue for three concluding Wednesday at fl p.m Bingo a cherry pie eating contest an open house at the Coast Guard Air Station the NCF tennis tournament and dancing at the Sommer Haus were other events scheduled for opening day The Coast Guard Cutter inaw was anchored in Grand Traverse Bay today awaiting the arival tonight ot the al Cherry Queen Rebecca sen and the Royal Court The girls will depart from the inaw in a Royal Wedge ol boats which will bring them to Clinch Park Marina at p.m marking their official arrival to the festival The Coast Guard Air Station in Traverse Cily is ing extensively in the festival this year with its Color Guard marching in till three parades an aircraft flyover prior to the Junior Royale on Thursday and the Cherry Royale on Friday and a search and rescue Thursday beginning at 4 p.m at Clinch Park Beach The demonstration includes drops of rescue ment rescue of survivors in the water and helicopter rescue use of hoist and rescue basket During the open house at thi Air Station today crewmen conducted a helicopter flight demonstration Highlights of the second day of the festival Tuesday include the popular Children's Pet Show at 10 at Lay Park and a new event the Milk Carton Boat Regatta also beginning at 10 The Regatta a series of races in homemade boats mada primarily of milk
