grow up the the polled to what careers they wouldbe most Titusville High School juniors got interested in learning more about a taste of the future Wednesday as paths they selected included representatives of 34 different career journalism law forestry accounting in 1 4n J 4t T 3 OS paths visited the school to talk about their respective jobs The guidance office sponsored the eighth annual Career Day for the junior class a day in which students attended their choices of three 40minute talks by various speakers in the morning and vis a college fair in the afternoon The junior year is when they are really starting to make some decisions about what they want to do when they graduate from high school said Gregory Houck guidance coun selor We have the speakers in the morning so they can get a feel for careers they may be interested in Houck said the speakers generally address possible educational routes to the job Juniors are in a position where they are starting to make those deci sions Houck said In the afternoon we have the college fair so they can follow up on some of the things they learned in and check on some schools they might be interested in and see what kind of programs they have Prior to the scheduling of Career architecture crimi nal investigation police military graphic design and several medical fields Most of the speakers are employed locally We have a lot of local speakers said Houck Weve got a couple from the Oil City and Franklin area A gentleman came from the Erie today and sometimes we get some from the Meadville area Id Kelly Anderson say 80 percent are THS junior Titusville or pretty Day is very informative for everybody and its well put together They a really g range of speakers close to Titusville Following each speakers presenta tion the guidance department col feedback from all angles Students evaluate the speakers and teachers and speakers evaluate the event In doing so the guidance department is better able to see where changes need to be made in programs for future years Overall students appreciated the work the guidance department put into the program I think its really a good said Kelly Anderson Its very Congress Wednesday for a billion down payment for next years US operations in Iraq and Afghanistan a retreat from the White Houses earlier plans not to seek the money until after the November elections The money half of what White House officials have said they expect to need for 2005 is designed to carry the military through the first months of the new budget year which starts next Oct 1 Congress is likely to be adjourned for much of that period and the Army in particular would be expect ed to face a cash crunch unless funds were approved beforehand While we do not know the precise costs for operations next year recent develop ments on the ground and increased demands on our troops indicate the need to plan for contingencies President Bush said in a statement We must make sure there is no disruption in funding and resources for our troops See IRAQ Page 2 WalMarts variance request by Holly Matthews OIL CREEK TOWNSHIP WalMart Stores East LP has been granted a variance from the township zoning ordinance allow ing one of WalMarts stan dard pylon signs to be placed at to the it plans to build along Route 8 north The Oil Creek Township Zoning Hearing Board con ducted a public hearing Wednesday on the retailers request for a dimensional variance on the proposed surface area and height of the sign Because the town ship zoning ordinance does not limit the height of a sign no variance would be need ed for the proposed 30foot sign Therefore the board was not required to act on that portion of the request Representing the township at the hear ing was Jody Davison Forest Warren and Venango counties was joined by Titusville Area School District Physical Education Chair Tim McCord along with Heisman Trophy win ner Herschel Walker tennis legend Billie Jean King and several members of con gress to unveil a new plan by to battle the epidemic of childhood obesi ty Titusville is home to a nationally rec program which teach es young people to stay in shape through daily physical exercise and by encourag ing a healthy active lifestyle McCord who recently testified about the program before a US House subcommittee led a group of students in an exercise demon stration similar to what young people experience as part of the pro gram In 2000153 percent of American chil dren were obese more than double the number in 1976 According to Peterson Childhood obesity is a growing problem that will have wide ranging consequences if young people arent encouraged to exer cise and live healthy at a young age We Herschel Congressman John Peterson center arid lives regardless of whether they are star athletes or par in organized sports programs I would encourage every school district to take advantage of the program and help our next generation set the example for how to live active healthy lifestyles Peterson and the other participants were joined by President Anne Flannery to announce a new initiative to improve the health and well being of Americas youth Increased funding for the Carol White Physical Education Program Now in its fourth year the PEP program grants million in fiscal year 2004 are invigorating PE pro grams and attracting more young people to healthy and active lifestyles Improved PE programs following Institute guidelines that arent about making baskets or scoring goals but increasing heart rates The program is putting the fun back into sports fitness recreation and exercise in a way that inspires all stu dents to want to be active every day of the for the to lead policy change efforts and measure results
