About Great House Documents Are Burned FLAMES ORIGINATE IN ARTISTS ROOM Twenty Fire Companies Quickly Respond and Confine Blaze To Document Room Ity Associated Press WASHINGTON Jan 3 Flames shot skyward from the capitol of the United States tonight in a blaze more spectacular than that which ruined the White House executive offices on eve After 45 minutes of desperate work firemen extinguished the fire in the studio on the top floor of the house side just to the west of the huge white dome For a while de struction of the document room where historic records of the nation are stored was threatened were damaged by water and smoke Carl Moberly one of the artists was carried unconscious from the studio Investigation of the cause of the fire late tonight was awaiting his ery Flames shot from the roof upon the dome of the capitol as firemen sped from of the city The firemen experienced great dif reaching the studio with water because of the small corridors and winding staircases to the fourth floor where it is situated Twenty minutes had elapsed before water could be played from the long hose lines rapid ly strung together Strung Over Ladders Meanwhile ladders were reared up the white sides of the building and over these more hose was stretched David S Lynn capitol architect and police immediately began an investiga tion to determine the cause of the blaze It was said that a lighted cigar ette might have been responsible The alarm was turned in at 7 p m by member of the capitol police force whose attention had been attracted by some time before the source was determined A general alarm brought companies from all corners of the city Fire Chief Watson announced the flames had been extinguished 45 min utes later Me estimated the damage as slight and the building by a cigarette There was no damage at the other two fires but they caused some ex Lands Plane on Mowing Machine Postpones Trip MIAMI Fla Jan Alicia Patterson writer flier and daughter of Joseph Medill Patter son Chicago and New York publish er landed her plane en top of a mowing machine at the municipal air port here today Two city em ployes were injured not seriously Miss Patterson two miles off her course the municipal ferry William R Hearst rammed and sank the tug Mutual today at Beards dry dock Brooklyn Eighteen men were thrown into the water and four of them members of the tugs crew who were dragged down as she was crushed between the ferry and the breakwater were badly in jured Two hundred passengers aboard the ferry became frightened but were quieted by tiw crew before anyone was injured The Mutual and several other tugs had crept up to the breakwater through the fog and tied up there to wait until they could see their way cut Suddenly the big ferry loomed up ancl there was a crash Captain Is Rescued Caught between the ferry and the breakwater the tug was crushed and sank carrying down her captain Harry Bass and his crew of seven The impact also threw ten men who were standing on the breakwater into the water The ferry turned on her big search lights and threw lifelines to the Mutuals crew the others in the wa ter having managed to scramble back onto the breakwater without assis tance hurt in the collision Cap tain Bass failed to grasp a line an drifted out cf reach Captain Bennett cf the tug tied up alongside Mutual leaped into the water swam ever and brought him ashore unconscious Ke and three members of his crew who also were seriously injured were taken to a hospital the fog another municipal ferry the Rodman Wanamaker ran aground on a reef east of Governors island Neither the William R Hearst nor the Rodman Wanamaker was ser iously damaged and both continued in service after the accidents Belgian Princess Leaves For Marriage in Italy BRUSSELS Jan 3 AP Princess Marie Jose tonight rode away from her native land in a sumptuously decorated royal train for Italy where in the normal course of events she will one day share the throne The official party journeying to Rome for her marriage to Crown Prince Humbert on next day occupied three trains They left here in close succession after p m with the exact route to be followed tims of the fatal Christmas package in the same grave Despite three days investigation by Maryland state police assisted by Dis of Columbia detectives the iden tity of the person who sent the gaily wrapped high explosives to the bride of Herman Brady at the home of her father remained hidden behind the evidence left in the wrecked Schroeder socalled blonde trigger woman wanted in connection with the slaying of a highway patrolman re mained a despite a week of unrelenting search by police of three states Two men alleged to have been with the woman when Corporal Brady Paul was killed and Private Ernest Moore wounded near here last Friday also being sought Authorities today continued to run down clues as to the whereabouts of the trio Police of Wheeling W Va said they had found a dress believed to have been discarded by Mrs Schroeder while she was in this section last weekend to leave her 4yearold son with relatives The dress was located in a hotel room The Schroeder child who had trav about the country with his parent has been quoted by police as saying his mother shot two cops The child ac cording to investigators also revealed the womans companions as her broth er Tom Crawford and Glenn Dague It also was mentioned in police cir cles at Wheeling today that Mrs Schroeder might have gone to Ala bama where she was known to have several months not long ago Clue Leads To liquor he is guilty of conspiracy with the bootleg ger to violate the prohibition law Prohibition Commissioner Doran an that an agreement had been entered into with the industrial alco hol manufacturers to reduce this years output of alcohol by 15 percent Leaks of industrial alcohol have been pointed to by dry leaders as the main problem of prohibition enforcement Secretary Mellon If the purchaser carries liquor to his home the brief said he is guilty of the crime of transportation and while he keeps it he is guilty of the crime of possession If a purchaser agrees and cooperates with the seller to have the liquor transported not to himself but to a friend it seems clear that he is guilty of a conspiracy to transport We submit that there is no reason why the fact that the agreed transportation is to himself makes him less guilty Whether or not the national pro act makes the act of pur chase a crime of itself a question which is not involved in this it IN HITS was one of the best known of the modern day cartoon ists the whereabouts of Irene Schroeder and two men wanted in connection with the killing of Corporal Paul of the Pennsylvania highway patrol near New Castle a week ago today The officers examined clothing left by a blonde woman and a man in an automobile abandoned here after the holdup of a grocery store three days before the Pennsylvania
